This announcement comes at the height of the winter holidays for zone C, which includes Toulouse and Paris, and zone A, which includes Bordeaux. The reason: the significant risk of a 25-ton rock falling on the RD 920 access road to Cauterets, precisely when a vehicle is passing by.
As a result, the RD920 will be closed from the Pierrefitte-Nestalas exit in the direction of Cauterets in both directions from Thursday, February 22 at 7 a.m. until Friday, February 23. The road will be reopened as soon as possible, the authorities assure.
Emergency works have been decreed. The prefecture therefore announced in a communiqué that work will be carried out involving the closure of the only road leading to the station.
"The greenway linking Pierrefitte-Nestalas to Cauterets, known as "the way of the traveller", will also be closed, including to pedestrians, during this same period.
Access to it will be reserved only for emergency and service vehicles under the control of the national gendarmerie."
This work will last at least 24 hours. At the end, a temporary alternative traffic system will be put in place.
The Cirque du Lys ski area, the spa centre and the Bains du Rocher remain open, just as the small ski resort of Pont d'Espagne is accessible during the piste works, as indicated on the resort's official website. In other words, people staying in the village will be able to reach the piste area as usual. What they cannot do is to leave the village.

Fair but possible deadlines for the new gondola lift that should connect the village of Benasque with the ski slopes of Cerler. If all goes well, the manufacturer will be awarded this summer, and in autumn they will start working for December 2025 to be able to release it.
