Alpe d'Huez reaches 480 cm of snow
It is usual that at this point of the season extraordinary thicknesses start to be recorded, but in general we find them in Alaska, the northern island of Japan or even in some ski resorts in California such as Mammoth Mt. or Palisades Tahoe.
But right now this year, the title goes to a ski resort in Europe. Alpe d'Huez reported in their latest report for yesterday, Saturday, that they had reached 480 cm at 3,300 meters above sea level. Currently no other ski resort exceeds that record.
The season in the Alps has been very irregular this winter. While there were large accumulations of snow before Christmas, reaching 4 meters in some resorts around that time, and in January it continued to snow heavily, then in February there were freezing temperatures that spoiled many slopes and even forced the closure of many ski areas in ski resorts.
In fact the World Cup was affected by having to cancel several races in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Chamonix and Bansko.
Now for a few days the weather has changed again, stabilizing first at normal levels for the season, to leave in the last 48 hours extraordinary snowfall in the middle of winter and not those that would touch at the gates of the meteorological spring. In fact, the World Cup was again affected by the cancellation of the two Super-Gs scheduled in Val di Fassa, but due to excessive snow.
Among other ski resorts in the Alps that currently exceed 4 meters we find Les Arcs or Flaine, while it is expected that in the coming hours Les Grands Montets, Argentière or St. Anton am Arlberg will reach this figure.
Despite the large accumulation of snow, the ski resort opens normally these days.
Fair but possible deadlines for the new gondola lift that should connect the village of Benasque with the ski slopes of Cerler. If all goes well, the manufacturer will be awarded this summer, and in autumn they will start working for December 2025 to be able to release it.
