The ski and mountain resort of Alto Campoo has closed this Wednesday the shortest ski season in its history with a balance of 29 days open for skiing and 34,113 users compared to 116,000 last season.
The high temperatures of the last days and the forecasts of rain and absence of snow for the next weeks have anticipated the closing of the facility, managed by the public company Cantur.
Teleskiing in Alto Campoo
The station opened last January 10 for skiing, but the weather conditions of this "unusual" winter only allowed it to remain open for seven days and it could only start up again from February 28.
According to the Government, during this time the ski resort has maintained a "good average" of skiers, especially last week with days of more than 2,000 users and practically most of the 23 slopes open. But the lack of snow and low temperatures have also prevented the production of artificial snow, a circumstance that is expected to be repeated in the coming weeks and that has led to the decision to close the facilities and end the season.
Although skiing has only been possible for one month, Alto Campoo has remained open for a total of 53 days for tourist use with the aim of offering an alternative to visitors to the region.
The Councilor of Culture, Tourism and Sports and President of the Board of Directors of Cantur, Eva Guillermina Fernández, thanked the management and employees of the resort for their work.
"in spite of all the difficulties caused by the adverse weather conditions for what is expected of a ski season".
When it has been opened for skiing, the affluence has been very high.
Fernandez recalled that his department has launched the promotional hotel offer 'Campoo +X discover' with the aim of encouraging inland tourism in the municipalities of southern Cantabria and try to alleviate the lack of visitors and customers these months.
"We are aware of the negative impact that the weather has had in recent months, not only in the station but in all businesses in Campoo and our purpose is to try to attract visitors for Easter and spring."
Thus, the counselor explained that 'Campoo +X discover' seeks to compensate for the loss of the high ski season and, in addition to boosting the tourism and services ski area, aims to highlight the cultural, scenic and gastronomic attractions of Campoo.
Fair but possible deadlines for the new gondola lift that should connect the village of Benasque with the ski slopes of Cerler. If all goes well, the manufacturer will be awarded this summer, and in autumn they will start working for December 2025 to be able to release it.
