The French Pyrenees, like the rest of Europe, used to start the ski season shortly before the Christmas holidays. Just enough to get going before the first big festive period. But the growing popularity of the Spanish bank holidays has recently motivated our neighbours to advance the start of the season, especially in those ski resorts that are very popular among Spanish skiers.
This is the case of Cauterets, where more than 20% of the skiers are from Spain. A not inconsiderable percentage that is still increased during the long weekend of the bank holiday.
The snowfall in Cauterets began on November 18, and since then snowfalls have been staining its slopes and terraces white. In the last two days, practically a meter of snow has fallen and taking into account that they had been treading with the machines for days, surely a large part of that thickness will be able to be used.

Thus, on Saturday, December 3, the 2022-2023 ski season will begin in Cauterets. In the absence of an official report, it can almost be guaranteed that there will be no shortage of powder snow. The temperatures indicate that they will remain low, and the forecasts even announce some more snowfall in the coming days.
Philippe Dupla, director of the Cirque du Lys site, explains that from the station they estimate that there are currently about 40 centimetres of snow underfoot: “The preparation of the ski area began about ten days ago, coinciding with the first snowfall. This base is essential for the season and allows us to anticipate a serene start to the season."

The spanish bank holiday is an important benchmark for Cauterets, which awaits its real campaign start for Christmas, coinciding with the school holidays so that families can go on holiday together, and of course, skiing.
From now on, five fruitful months of ski season are expected, relevant both for skiers who choose to go skiing in Cauterets, and for professionals who live from this ski resort, since they will be able to operate well into the final stretch of the season, since the closing date for this campaign is April 23.
As for the rest of the N'Py stations, for the moment the start date is scheduled for December 10. This has been announced by Peyragudes, Le Grand Trourmalet, Luz-Ardiden and Gourette in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, while Piau-Engaly and La Pierre Saint-Martin, which have already accumulated enough snow, will soon decide what to do.
Fair but possible deadlines for the new gondola lift that should connect the village of Benasque with the ski slopes of Cerler. If all goes well, the manufacturer will be awarded this summer, and in autumn they will start working for December 2025 to be able to release it.
