Ordino Arcalís
Of the little more than 40 ski resorts in the Iberian Peninsula and Pyrenees, less than half of them managed to reach 130,000 skiers. Well, this is the number of ski days sold by the three winter resorts of Grandvalira Resorts just this past weekend. Which gives us a picture of the Andorran 'giant'.
The figure, in addition to being excellent, reflects the fans' desire to enjoy some real downhill runs. The heaviest snowfalls of the winter arrived on January 5, but it was not until this weekend that they could be enjoyed in full swing, that is, with many open pistes and clear skies.
According to declarations of Juan Ramón Moreno, to El Periódic d'Andorra,
"We have had the best weekend of the season and we have seen that people are still very eager to ski. More than 130,000 skiers have gathered in a unique weekend, which gives no hope. Without a doubt, the perspective we have now is much better than the one we had last week".
Until the arrival of this prolific snowfall, hopes for a season recovery were somewhat pessimistic.
At the moment, the ski resorts of Andorra offered this weekend a total of 220 kilometers of slopes, being Grandvalira the one that took most of the cake with 135 km, while Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís, were left with 55 and 27 km respectively.
Grandvalira Resorts has hope in the weather models that announce some other snowfall for the end of this week that would allow to get close to 100% open slopes, especially in Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís.
"It looks like at the end of this week we will have another snowfall and we hope that this can help us a little to face the coming weeks, as our intention is to open 100% as soon as possible. If luck is with us, the months of February and March will be good.
The situation is complicated, because the temperatures are very variable and make things more difficult. However, they have dropped a little these days and that has allowed us to be able to produce snow. But I'm optimistic because everything seems to be going well, but we also have to count on this luck factor.
If the forecasts are fulfilled, we might be able to use for the first time the new TSF4 Seig chairlift that gives access to a new area of slopes in El Tarter. Known as Encampadana, it was launched about 10 years ago as a freeride area supported by some marked trails. Now about 5 km of marked trails have been installed, all of them for expert skiers.
What will be released now, according to Moreno told El Periódic d'Andorra, is the Tubbings slope, which was inaugurated for the first time last season, and the La Solana chairlift.
Ordino Arcalís currently has 22 slopes open.
Fair but possible deadlines for the new gondola lift that should connect the village of Benasque with the ski slopes of Cerler. If all goes well, the manufacturer will be awarded this summer, and in autumn they will start working for December 2025 to be able to release it.
