The French glacier of Les 2 Alpes boasts the largest summer ski area thanks to its more than 20 kilometers of slopes. A maximum that as the weeks go by is getting smaller and smaller and that last year could barely be maintained for a few days.
Last year's hot spring and summer have taken their toll on the glacier, and everything indicates that in 2023 it will not be able to recover anything of what was lost. However, the spring has been cooler than usual and it has even snowed quite a lot. However, the station currently announces a thickness of 150 cm on the glacier. A situation that has led them to bring forward this spring-summer season, as they have assured in a statement:
"To adapt to weather changes and protect the glacier, SATA, the ski lift company, has decided to open the resort earlier, but also to close it earlier (from May 2 to June 30). However, pedestrians will still be able to access the glacier throughout the summer and enjoy the stunning views and cooler temperatures."
The traditional ski season began at Les 2 Alpes in December and closed on April 23. Therefore, the staff has barely had time to rest for a few days and get the facilities up and running for this May 2.
It will continue to be called the summer ski season, although most of the hotel offer will actually take place in spring. Until last year's 'disaster' it was usual to start in mid-June and at the end of July or some years in August, skiing activities were considered finished until autumn.
To get to the glacier from the base you must make a long journey of just over half an hour that starts getting on the Jandri Express gondola at 1600 meters to finish this first section at 3,200 meters. From there the Dome Express funicular continues to 3,421 meters.
It will be possible to ski from 3,600 meters in the Dôme de la Lauze area to 3,200 meters at the lowest part, where some training areas such as Muretouse and Dôme Nord are also installed.
The other two French summer ski resorts, Tignes and Val d'Isere, plan to continue opening from June to July, but with shorter opening periods of five weeks.
Fair but possible deadlines for the new gondola lift that should connect the village of Benasque with the ski slopes of Cerler. If all goes well, the manufacturer will be awarded this summer, and in autumn they will start working for December 2025 to be able to release it.
