Piau Engaly brought the curtain down on the winter season on Tuesday, April 11 with positive results. Turnover, 5.2 million euros, increased by 10% compared to last season and the number of skiers also grew, in this case by 7%.
Investments made in particular to increase the range of services and to support the improvement of the accommodations seem to have attracted a greater influx of customers.
SEML Piau-Aragnouet has therefore announced the second phase of its resort requalification project, called Natura Piau and designed by French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte.
Its goal is to transform Piau, a resort at the foot of the winter slopes, into a 4-season mountain destination. "From this summer, economic life in the resort will be more intense thanks to the maintenance of professional partners during the holidays, unlike in previous years, when many closed from winter onwards," says Emilie Mothes, deputy director of SEML Piau - Aragnouet.
Phase 2 of the Natura Piau project, with a budget of 25 million euros, will run from 2023 to 2025. It is financed by SEML Piau-Aragnouet, the Occitanie Regional Agency for Development and Construction and the store owners.
Thus, earthworks will continue for the construction of a new aparthotel (19 million euros). Its accommodation capacity will be 302 beds in 57 apartments and it will be located directly on the slopes and at the start of the hiking trails, at the gates of the Pyrenees National Park.
Phase 2 also includes the requalification of the heart of the resort, with the renovation of all the pedestrian paths, as well as the resurfacing of these. The configuration of the Piau-Engaly resort makes it possible to spend a stay without relying on the car and to do everything on foot.
The coverage of the shopping centers, around which life and leisure are organized, will also be rehabilitated. Their current structure will be replaced by wood and steel materials, more resistant and in total harmony with the mineral environment, characteristic of this high mountain resort.
Fair but possible deadlines for the new gondola lift that should connect the village of Benasque with the ski slopes of Cerler. If all goes well, the manufacturer will be awarded this summer, and in autumn they will start working for December 2025 to be able to release it.
