The Sierra Nevada ski and mountain resort has ended its 2022/23 winter season with a resounding success, registering a record number of 1,061,798 users, of which 810,576 were skiers and 251,222 non-skiing visitors. The latter group, who enjoyed various recreational activities in the snow, represented an all-time record for the resort.
Despite the weather difficulties at the beginning and end of the season, the resort offered a wide range of skiing during the central months, thanks to the renewed snowmaking system. During the 135 days that the resort operated, all skiable areas were kept open for almost two months, with between 60 and 70 kilometers of skiable slopes and an average thickness of 20 to 60 centimeters.
The new Emile Allais chairlift has substantially improved the transport capacity compared to its predecessors.
Hotel occupancy remained at around 65%, with periods in January and February exceeding 80%. With the balance sheets yet to be closed, the resort has generated a turnover in excess of 40 million euros and a gross profit in excess of 9 million euros, which makes it possible to maintain the investment flow with its own resources foreseen in the financial planning.
The number of non-skiing visitors has increased steadily in recent seasons, and this season reached a record 251,146 gondola lift and snow activities users. The incorporation of new areas such as Laguna and Parador boosted the season until the arrival of spring, with February and March 2023 being among the busiest in the historical series and reaching, as of March 31, the turnover obtained last season.
This winter has had important novelties in Sierra Nevada, especially the opening of two new ski lifts in Borreguiles: the Emile Allais and Alhambra chairlifts. These new lifts have exceeded expectations, increasing transport capacity by 60% compared to the old chairlifts they replaced.
In addition, the new location of the Alhambra chairlift has generated a better occupancy and distribution of skiers on the beginner slopes of Borreguiles, allowing an increase in skiing time and the use of initiation lessons .
As for the gastronomic offer, the opening of the restaurant El Chalé Suizo has meant an important leap in quality, both for the menu based on the cheese tradition of the Alpine country and for the aesthetic renovation of the space.
The resort has hosted around 30 sports competitions this season.
The resort has also been versatile in terms of the organization of sporting events, holding a total of 24 sporting events of all winter sports disciplines, which has generated 30 days of official competition with the participation of more than 3,000 athletes of all ages. Among the outstanding events was the double Snowboard Cross World Cup held in March with the participation of Spanish rider Lucas Eguibar.
Finally, the Sun and Snow electronic music festival has reached its maturity in its fifth edition in its new location in the Los Peñones car park lot, becoming a musical reference among European ski resorts, with an attendance of 2,000 people in each of the three days of concerts.
The forecast for next season in terms of improved facilities is very positive.
Meanwhile, the resort is already preparing one of the main novelties for the 23/24 season with the renovation of the mythical Al-Andalus gondola lift which, after 33 years of service, will be replaced by a new D-Line DDD (Doppelmayr) gondola lift. The old cabins have already been dismantled and in the next few days the cable will be removed, after which the dismantling of the towers will begin.
