The almost perpetual traffic jam in the interior of the town of La Massana in Andorra could have its days numbered if the studies being handled by the Department of Mobility of the country for the future road that will run along the outside of the town are successful.
It is one of the most demanded projects to try to reduce the heavy traffic stress that this population supports, especially in winter during the hours of greater circulation by the ski resorts, that is to say from 08 h to 09.30h. And also in the afternoon on the way back from 16.30 h.
The Department of Mobility of Andorra calculates that more than 16,000 vehicles of all types circulate every day in the interior of the town of La Massana. Especially individuals going to or coming from the villages of the Valls del Nord, which have registered a strong growth in recent years. But also trucks and coaches. During the ski season, there are also buses that take skiers to the slopes from the hotels.
The new road in La Massana will run through the outside of the village, starting at the tunnel of the two Valires and reaching the Pal Arinsal cable car exit terminal building. There the road will branch off in the direction of Ordino.
The director of the Department of Mobility, Jaume Bonell, said this weekend in an interview on Radio Nacional de Andorra, that the new Vial de la Massana can remove up to 10,000 vehicles a day from the center of the town.
According to the project study, about 16,000 vehicles per day will circulate along the new Massana road, distributed as follows:
5,000 will come down from Ordino
3,400 will come down from Pal i Arinsal
5,000 will go up to Ordino
3,400 will go up to Pal i Arinsal
The study calculates that the time savings can be as much as 53%, although at peak times of the year it can be reduced to 19%.
To avoid traffic jams on the new La Massana road, traffic capacity will be doubled, with a maximum of 30,720 vehicles per day. A side effect of this new project is the strong reduction of pollution by avoiding so many idling cars on this road that Ski Passes through the center of the village of La Massana.
Who will also benefit will be the skiers who are spending several days on holiday and want to try the different resorts to which the Andorra Pass gives access, since getting from Grandvalira to the slopes of Pal Arinsal or Ordino Arcalís will be much faster.Or vice versa for those who have chosen to stay in the Valls del Nord.
Still there is another 'bottleneck' that could be more stressed in ski season, which is the passage through the interior of Canillo. The roads leading to this town have a capacity of 800 vehicles, but once inside the village this figure is reduced to only 450 cars.
Fair but possible deadlines for the new gondola lift that should connect the village of Benasque with the ski slopes of Cerler. If all goes well, the manufacturer will be awarded this summer, and in autumn they will start working for December 2025 to be able to release it.
and be the first to receive great ski deals!
