Reaching the Panticosa cable car from the end of the Estrimal ski slope, already in the town itself, will be easier from next season when a new bridge over the Bolática River is completed. It will be wider, which will allow a safer exit after the descent.
Until now the exit of the Estrimal is made through a bridge that was restored in 2006 with the aim of one day being the end of this track. But time has left this footbridge too small, which at times had too many skiers.
The bridge at the foot of the Estrimal slope will be replaced by a wider bridge.
The Estrimal slope was inaugurated in 2014, a year after 1,200 skiers and snowboarders were trapped in the Petrosos restaurant at Cota 1900 after ski resort officials decided to stop all lifts for safety reasons, due to the strong wind. Gusts reached up to 110 kilometers per hour. In the absence of an evacuation slope, all those affected had to be lowered on ski lifts in groups of 20 people.
Only one year later, the Estrimal slope was inaugurated with an average width of 25 meters and a length of 1,251 meters from the "Selva Verde" area to the village of Panticosa, reaching a minimum height of only 1,145 meters, the lowest elevation of any ski resort in Spain. However, it is classified as a red run, so it is suitable for medium-high level skiers.
The project for the new Estrimal ski slope in Panticosa already included a new bridge over the Bolática River. Already at that time it was seen that the existing one did not have the necessary dimensions and resistance for the new uses.
This bridge at the end of the Estrimal will be replaced by a new footbridge.
Ten years later, this last project is beginning to become a reality. The new bridge, to be paid for by Panticosa Town Council as owner of the land through which the Estrimal runs, will cost 336,135.54 euros and is being built 17 meters away from the current footbridge. It will measure 28 meters and will be supported only by the ends, without bollards, at a height above the riverbed of about 4.75 meters.
The bridge will also serve as a way out of the new Tobogán de Panticosa, also in charge of this City Council, and whose project drafting is expected to be approved for inauguration in the summer of 2025, although it will also be put into operation during the ski season. Then the gondola lift will have to be shared between sleds and skiers.
