Grandvalira Resorts closed the Christmas holidays with a strong number of visitors. Between December 19 and January 8, 407,000 skiers visited Grandvalira, Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís ski resorts, a similar figure to the one of the previous year. Andorra continues to be one of the main ski destinations to spend the Christmas holidays and a good influx is expected in the coming weeks, mostly from international markets.
Grandvalira Resorts has positively evaluated the Christmas period from December 19 to January 8, when it received 407,000 skiers in its different resorts, a similar -but 3% lower- influx compared to the previous year, when it was 420,000 skiers. During the first two weeks of the holidays, the occupancy of the ski slopes in Andorra was slightly higher than the previous year, while in the last week, the first week of January, there was a slight decrease.
The resort that received the most skiers during this period was Grandvalira with 298,000 visitors, followed by Pal Arinsal, with 73,000 visitors, a slight decrease compared to last year, but offset by an increase in average spending per customer. Ordino Arcalís received 36,000 skiers during the Christmas period and has registered a 60% increase in visitors compared to the previous year due to the good conditions of the resort and the closures of the previous season.
Andorran ski resorts have been able to revalidate last season's visitor numbers.
The general manager of Grandvalira Resorts, Juan Ramon Moreno, points out that bookings for the rest of January and for the season are very good and expects to receive a similar number of skiers to the previous season, which was exceptional. Despite the lack of snow and high temperatures in the Pyrenees and much of Europe during December, Andorran ski resorts have kept a large number of slopes open, due to their guaranteed snow and the excellent work of the terrain team.
During the Christmas period, Grandvalira had between 109 km and 132 km of skiable slopes with thicknesses of up to 35 centimeters, being the resort with the most kilometres available in the whole Iberian Peninsula. For its part, Pal Arinsal kept more than 85% of the slopes open with thicknesses of up to 40 cm, and Ordino Arcalís had more than 80% of the slopes with up to 55 cm of snow.
In the coming weeks, weather forecasts announce a drop in temperatures and snowfall, especially on January 15 and 16. Moreno points out that already during the first week of January, conditions have been more favorable with some light snowfalls and low temperatures.
The traditional Christmas activities have been very well received by visitors to the three ski resorts, highlighting among them the visits of Santa Claus to the different snow gardens of Grandvalira and Ordino Arcalís, as well as the Cagatió and the visit of the Royal Page to Pal Arinsal. In addition, the torchlight descents in Pas de la Casa, Soldeu and the torchlight descent in Soldeu have been very popular, with the participation of more than 200 people in each of them, in addition to the public who attended. The latter also served as a stage for the promotion of Andorra as a candidate to host the World Alpine Ski Championships in 2029 with a great LED light show.
Catering establishments and ski schools operated at almost 100%, as well as Grandvalira Resorts' activities, which also had high occupancy. Among them, in Grandvalira mushing, snowmobiling, the Mon(t) Magic Family Park in Canillo and night skiing in Pas de la Casa stood out, while in Pal Arinsal the activities for children were very well received, especially the sledging track, tubbing and the Big Airbag, and in Ordino Arcalís the guided snowshoe excursions in Port del Rat and the Mirador Solar in Tristaina.
The musical performances at L'Abarset were very well attended.
For its part, L'Abarset enjoyed agreat après-ski atmosphere every day with DJs and parties that filled the venue. The most outstanding days were December 30 with the first edition of the Greenworld festival in Grandvalira, December 31 with Viviana Casanova and January 6 with the second edition of the Brunch -In The Snow, which was attended by around 4,300 people.
