February is usually the best month for ski resorts in general. Not only in Spain, but also in the rest of Europe. Our resorts, especially in the Pyrenees, have been registering strong influxes of skiers for several consecutive years. Especially because of the anticyclone, accompanied by low temperatures, which in recent winters has allowed skiing on sunny days and with a good supply of slopes.
This year February has not had such a strong anticyclone, but more snow than other seasons. Although we started January with drought and higher temperatures than usual, from the 20th the situation changed radically. The thermometer dropped sharply to the point that it compensated the anomaly of the first days, and snowfall arrived.
Thus February began with good snow conditions and temperatures that have remained low. All this accompanied by some more snowfall. The situation is that the bleeding of cancellations at the beginning of January has been completely reversed, significantly increasing the influx.
Ski resorts, such as Candanchú, assure that:
"We went from having some pretty bad months compared to previous seasons to registering one of the best Februaries in the last ten years. And although we have not fully recovered the impact of the weak start, I am confident that March will be enough of a boost to reach a very similar number of skiers to other years.
I think good snow conditions are assured until at least the 15th and we are hopeful for more snowfall to come that we can accompany with our own production if the cold continues."
Restaurants, slopes, hotels, equipment stores and all kinds of services agree with the General Manager of Candanchú, Alvaro Luna, that this February is helping to match the numbers of other years, and that March will give the necessary push for consolidation. This is the case of the Panticosa Spa, where its director, Jesús González, also assures that the last weekends have been full or almost full, with numbers very similar to 2022.
"In short, we are having a very good winter campaign, both in terms of accommodation and thermalism. And for March I am also very optimistic because although bookings are increasingly being made at the last minute, this snow that has just fallen acts as a call effect and I think we will hold up very well until Easter."
The rental stores also have a positive balance. In Formigal, Javier Mimbrera, where he manages the Nepal Boutique, which has been open for 20 years, assures that:
"2022 was already a record turnover, but this year we are on slope to beat it because December and January worked very well even though there was not much snow, and February has been spectacular.
With these last snowfalls, people's desire will be reactivated, although for us, more than the snow, the important thing is that there is sun, so let's get to work".
The downside of February is the queues that form on certain days of the month at peak times when it's time to get on the ski lifts. A problem that, thanks to social networks, is a global problem: no ski resort in the world has been able to solve this issue.
The most spectacular queues are generated in North America. The fact that the most used lift there is the so-called "quad", that is, the four-people chairlift, means that the lines are often kilometres long.
In the Alps, the major resorts also have long queues at the ski lifts during February, when school holidays coincide in half of Europe. Thousands of families take to the snow in the same weeks.
In our country, the resorts are no strangers to this problem, and therefore, for the moment, they have not been the only ones on the planet to have solved it. Fortunately, the month of March the influx loosens enough and this year begins with spectacular conditions.
