Historic, moving, inspiring. Ax 3 Domaines is celebrating its 70th anniversary this season and it's a great time to discover the snowy jewel of the Ariège. Since its creation in 1955 , the ski and mountain resort in the French Pyrenees has remained authentic and simple, with the corresponding evolution of its three major ski areas: Saquet, Campels and Bonascre and the 80 km comprising its 37 ski slopes.

The location of Ax 3 Domaines , 30 kilometres from the Spanish border, an hour from Foix and two from Toulouse, even offers the opportunity to arrive by train and from here take the Skirail , the train that, in just under an hour and a half, will take you to the spa town of Ax-les-Thermes (located 8 km from Ax 3 Domaines) where a cable car takes you in just a few minutes to the foot of the Bonascre slopes. An initiative to preserve the environment.

Skiing among fir trees

Ax 3 Domaines is one of the most beautiful ski resorts in the French Pyrenees. 9 green runs, 11 blue runs, 10 red runs, 7 black runs and 20 lifts allow the most demanding skiers and snowshoe enthusiasts to enjoy the beauty of the heart of the Ax valley, a preserved natural environment that rises between 1,400 and 2,400 metres above sea level.

Between 1,400 and 2,000 metres above sea level, the Bonascre ski area comprises gentle slopes in a fir forest where you can discover the pleasures of gliding by day and by night. The Saquet ski area (1,900 and 2,300 m) is perfect for off-piste lovers, and the Campels ski area (1,700 and 2,400 m) offers vast expanses where you can get your adrenaline pumping.

Ax 3 Domaines is struck by the amount of fir forest on its mountains.

5 experiences to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Ax 3 Domaines

From the Les Pyrénées Tourist Office we recommend these five suggestions in case you decide to spend a few days skiing in Ax 3 Domaines

1. The Nordic baths of Bonascre

Heated by wood fire, between 1,400 and 2,000 m above sea level, are the Nordic baths of Bonascre. A pleasure that is perfect at any time, under the sun or the stars. The private bathroom for 6 people with an optional sauna can be rented.

2. La Tute/Tremplin

The mountain is designed to offer thrills. The most experienced skiers should definitely try “La Tute/Tremplin”, a black run that later turns red and is not easily tamed.

3. Getting off track… safely

Before setting off into the wilderness, Ax 3 Domaines offers a day of training or refresher courses to help you set off safely on your snowshoes or hiking skis. Learn to manage the risks and make the right decisions based on the avalanche bulletin. Understand the mechanisms of the snow cover and the formation of avalanches (depending on the slope's steepness, its orientation, etc.).

4. Contemplate another point of view

Visitors can relax at the Ax 3 Domaines viewing platform, which offers panoramic views of the Saquet ski area at an altitude of 2,100 metres. The site has tables and chairlifts converted into swings. DJ sessions are organised at weekends.

5. Local cuisine and thermal baths

Directly connected by cable car to the town of Ax-les-Thermes, the pleasures of Ax 3 Domaines continue here with the lively atmosphere of this high mountain resort, its wide range of local cuisine and bathing in the warmest waters of the Pyrenees, up to 77°C, sodium, sulphurous, rich in sulphur, silica and numerous trace elements.

After skiing, it is very pleasant to take advantage of the numerous swimming pools in the city :

At 33 to 38°C, Les Bains du Couloubret are one of the most exciting pleasures of a day in the snow. Here you will find 3,000 m² of well-being spread over three areas.

The Frigidarium with a cold water bath; the Caldarium, with hot water;

The Vaporarium , with a natural steam bath, as well as outdoor pools with water games, a sauna, a hammam and treatment cabins.

From base to summit, its ever-present fir trees will allow you to ski between trees.
