As of this November 1, it is mandatory that the vehicles be equipped with either winter / mixed tires or chains prepared to be used in case of snow to circulate in Andorra, Austria, Germany and the Italian Alps. In these countries, the police will sanction those who do not use them in case of snow or ice on the road.
This measure is effective as of November 1 and until May 15 and should serve to avoid situations such as those that occurred on March 5, 2015 in France, when a bus and 20 cars were trapped between the Eastern Pyrenees and Ariege on the Col del Puymorens road. That story of misfortune that ended well after a night of fear for motorists and bus passengers, caught on the road and in the cold.
If this obligation is breached, the penalties are 180 euros for passenger cars and 500 euros for vehicles of more than 3.5 tons.
Since this measure came into force, approved in January 2014, the Police Corps has sanctioned a total of 21 drivers, 9, who were driving with vehicles with license plates of the Principality and 12 tourists, (10 Spaniards and 2 Portuguese), according to the Andorran News Agency ANA.
