Gourette is studying the creation of new ski slopes in Vallon d'Anglas

The creation of ski slopes in the Vallon d'Anglas in Gourette is a project that first appeared in 2017, but has received a boost in recent months thanks to local entities such as 'Renouveau Val d'Ossau' or 'Les Amis de Gourette'.

This week during the presentation of the new features of Gourette for this coming ski season 2024-2025, Arnaud Libilbehety, Director of EPSA, the company that manages this winter resort and that of La Pierre de St. Martin, confirmed that this project is being studied, as long as it is to give it viability both in summer and winter.

However, he warns that the area could be prone to avalanches, so studies would have to be carried out beforehand. Should the project go ahead, it is estimated that the skiable area could be increased by 20% more, just by creating four new slopes in the Vallon d'Anglas.

This valley is currently one of the preferred off-piste areas for regular skiers at Gourette. It is accessed from the exit of the Anglas chairlift, and allows a continuous descent from about 1,000 meters that ends at the lake after which it is named. In summer, once the snow has melted, it would be open to hikers who can visit this freshwater nature reserve, those of Uzious and Lavedan, as well as the remains of the old mines in Gourette.

Project for the extension of trails to the Vallon d'Anglas

The extension of slopes by the Vallon d'Anglas was already raised in 2017 also as one of the works to connect Gourette and Artouste creating a skiable ski area of 100 kilometers of slopes. An initiative that was buried shortly after.

The boost to the Vallon d'Anglas project was revealed during the presentation this past Thursday, September 5, of the new features for the new ski season in Gourette, where the new Cotch gondola lift takes center stage.
