The DGA is making a firm commitment to get all the ski resorts in Aragon, both semi-public and private, to modernize their snowmaking systems. The objective is to equip these winter resorts with new equipment that is already much more efficient as it uses less energy and is capable of producing more snow with the same amount of water.
The objective is that all the ski resorts of Huesca and Teruel can compete with the same weapons as those of Catalonia, Andorra or Sierra Nevada, where in the last five years they have invested heavily in snow production systems. All the equipment has been modernized and is now controlled by computer systems that instructor the exact moment and location where to start up, which significantly increases efficiency.
Aragón's ski resorts will modernize their snowmaking systems.
The project is already underway, as reported today by the Heraldo de Aragón in an extensive article where it is stated that the first works will be tendered this spring to start the first phase of the project this coming ski season , to continue immediately in the summer of 2025 to close the second phase that same year.
According to what the Finance Minister of the Government of Aragón, Roberto Bermúdez de Castro, has informed the Heraldo, the total estimated investment is 77.8 million euros (+VAT), to be paid in five years and distributed as follows:
Government of Aragón: 61.2 million €
Ski resorts: 14.2 million €
FITE - Teruel: 12.9 million €
The first two items are earmarked for the ski resorts of Huesca, while that of the Teruel Investment Fund (FITE) will be used entirely to modernize the artificial snow system of the Javalambre and Valdelinares ski resorts.
The first works can already be carried out, starting this September, because the DGA has funds left over from the remodeling of the La Romareda stadium. Thus, the civil works of the Aramón ski resorts can now be put out to tender, while those of Astún and Candanchú will be left for the 2025-2026 winter season.
The distribution between ski res orts is logically made according to the number of hectares to be worked or the needs according to the latest investments in this ski area.
Formigal: 28.8 million €
Cerler 15 million € + 2.2 for Castanesa),
Astún: 8 million €
Candanchú 8 million €
Javalambre 6.8 million €
Valdelinares 6 million €
Panticosa 2.2 million €
Turismo de Aragón will be responsible for this colossal project, although Nieve de Aragón is expected to be recovered and then this organization will be the one to manage the initiative.
Aramón's ski resorts will have more than 2,000 artificial snow cannons.
The company responsible for all this modernization will be Techoalpin, world leader in the artificial snow production ski area, and which has installed these devices in practically all the ski resorts in Spain and Andorra. In addition to the cannons, the budget includes new reservoirs, especially for the new Castanesa ski area in Cerler, but there is also money for the cabling that this system will require, as it uses complex instructoring software that needs high-speed communication connections. In this way, Aramón expects the division to be:
Snowmaking equipment: 42.8 million €
New reservoirs: 10.1 million €
Assembly and civil works: 5.9 million €
Electrical installations: 1.7 million €
Work on slopes: 1.2 million €
The reality is that, as the Director of Aramón, Antonio Gericó, explained to El Heraldo, the programmed snow systems in Aragón (and extensible to the rest of the resorts) are so outdated that they are at a clear disadvantage with respect to the competition coming from the Andorran or Catalan Pyrenees, where they have invested heavily in recent years.
Thus, despite the fact that Aramon has more than 1,300 cannons, many of them date back to the 90s. With almost 40 years behind them, these devices are only capable of operating at temperatures of -4ºC, while the latest ones that have been added can operate at positive temperatures of up to 3ºC, despite a relative humidity of 20%.
When this program to modernize the artificial snowmaking system in Aragon's ski resorts comes to an end, Aramon expects to have increased its snowmaking equipment by a whopping 63%. At the moment we will see 248 for this winter and the remaining 577 for the following winter in 2025. At the same time, components of the current cannons will be changed to improve their performance and efficiency.
High and low pressure cannons will be renewed, especially at lower altitudes.
Cannons at Aramon:
Currently: 1,301
Total in 2025: 2,126
In Candanchú, the number of snowmaking equipment will be doubled, going from 132 to more than 300. With the 8 million that they will receive, they will reinforce the low and medium altitudes, with emphasis on Pista Grande, Rinconada-Tortiellas, Tobazo and accesses to Tuca. A new water reservoir will also be built, in addition to renewing the software and engine room.
Canyons in Candanchú:
Currently: 132
Total in 2025: 304
Finally, in Astún the objective is to double the number of slopes where there is artificial snow. El Heraldo speaks of reaching a dozen kilometres, with special emphasis on Canal Roya, Pastores, Tubo del Anayet, Águilas and the area of La Raca between 1,725 and 2,000 meters.
