May Peus maintains its support for Pirineus-Barcelona 2030

The president of the Royal Spanish Winter Sports Federation (RFEDI), May Peus, stated that the celebration of the Pirineus-Barcelona Olympic Games in 2030 would give the "final boost" to snow in Spain, and he is confident that rider Regino Hernández recovered the level that led him to bronze at PyeongChang 2018. In an interview with Europa Press, the manager assured that

"We are encouraged that the Sports Minister says he wants the World Cup or the Games in 2030. The Pirineus-Barcelona 2030 Games would reinforce the project that will be presented in Barcelona, and would be a good opportunity to give the final boost to the snow in Spain"

With a delegation of 13 athletes , Spain achieved two medals at the 2018 Games (skater Javier Fernández and snowboarder Regino Hernández bronzes) and winter sports intend to continue collaborating " on the great successes of Spanish sport " with the mirror that they were for the summer Barcelona'92.

Although before the RFEDI must face the post-COVID-19 stage, after a period of confinement that came in the final phase of the season.

"Life changed us at once. We went from hugging Regino and Lucas's successes in the World Cup to being locked up at home. We postponed the Spanish Championships and soon realized that the season was over"

May Peus said the quarantine has been lived "with great caution", "respect" and teleworking relentlessly.

"The strong suit was for my summer companions. The postponement of the Tokyo Games was a jug of cold water. We have been less affected by the Games and the elections, which we have on the 22nd"

During the health and economic crisis caused by COVID-19, they had, according to him, two options.

"Cry or sell scarves. We have accelerated the use of digital tools, such as the interviews by Instragram Live or the SpainsSnow solidarity meetings, in which we have collaborated with esMontañas and the #NuestraMejorVictoria initiative, promoted by Rafa Nadal and Pau Gasol to fight against the coronavirus, in which we raised more than 6,000 euros "

Likewise, the president of the RFEDI is proud to have been part of the " reconstruction " of Spanish sport, together with the Spanish Sports Association (ADESP) and the Higher Sports Council (CSD), and in the protocol of the return to the trainings.

"We were very cautious. Normally, we would start training at the beginning of May in the CAR in Sierra, but we delayed everything until June 22. We submitted the athletes to voluntary tests and there were no positives"

Economic impact and timing

The Study of the Impact of COVID-19 on the Spanish sports ecosystem revealed that the consequences of the pandemic would be, at least, 4.6 billion losses and a third of employment less in 2020. Of these consequences, it is complex, according to Peus, to evaluate the impact it has had on snow sports in Spain,

"It is difficult to give figures because our season begins on June 1 in the southern winter countries. The renewal of licenses is slower than other years, but we will not be able to have a photo of the impact until winter arrives and if the regrowth is going to less. We have prepared a budget of 20 percent less for the season 20-21 "

For the sixth consecutive year, the national teams have begun training at the Casa de España in Saas Fee , where they arrived on July 13 and will remain until mid-November adopting a strict anti-COVID-19 health protocol.

"Food is contracted by 'delivery', there is minimal contact between athletes and the concentrations will be longer to avoid the risks of transfers. We have canceled our concentrations in South America, where, by the way, they are registering snow records"

The International Federation (FIS) has designed three calendar scenarios for the 20-21 season:
- a normal one, copying what MotoGP is doing to avoid trips;
- another one by blocks; and
- one last one competing only in Europe. On 24 and 25 October the Alpine Skiing World Cup would debut in Soelden (Austria), and the Snowboard World Cup in November.

The national calendar will debut in Jaca in August with the Spanish Rollerski Championship, and on 19-20 November the Spanish Championships and the Blanca Fernández Ochoa Trophy will be held at the Baqueira Beret resort in the Arán Valley of the Pyrenees. Catalan.

Before, on October 27, the national teams will appear in Barcelona at the INEF or the Montjuic Olympic Stadium, and the Snow Gala will be held from November 13 to 15 in Madrid SnowZone, which will host the first indoor test and the delivery of the fourth edition of the National Snow Sports Awards.

"In our DNA is helping women"

In the Spanish team, with 32 athletes , the names of the riders Lucas Eguibar and Queralt Castellet, that of the skier Juan del Campo, stand out, and the inclusion of the Olympic medalist Regino Hernández, in group C of snowboarding, is surprising.

"These are very objective technical decisions. Last year he spent the season injured and was not one hundred percent. But he will be on the World Cup circuit. Regino has recovered very well from the injury and is very competitive. He has started the training sessions with a lot of motivation, and this year he will be back in the lead. And next year he will be in team A "

Two of the projects that excite May Peus are the 'Snow Book', in which many photos and documentation have been ordered and cataloged and which has been commissioned from a historian who worked at the Paquito Fernández Ochoa Museum; and the Women and Snow area, whose head is Paula Fernández Ochoa.

"In our DNA is promoting aid to women. The CSD grant covers several of the projects that are going to be launched, one of them being scholarships for university women and that they can do internships at the Casa de España as a sports coach , physiotherapists, sports medicine specialists or sports psychologists "

In terms of labor integration , the RFEDI has reached agreements with universities for the training of its athletes and with the Association of Ski Resorts to enter the labor market at the end of their careers.

"Rienda worked in Sierra Nevada before being president of the CSD and Carolina Ruiz did it in the Andalusian Federation and is now responsible for the RFEDI children's teams"
