1 Road closure to favor the passage of cyclists

The Ordino Arcalís resort closed last Sunday, September 8, the summer season with billing figures and record visitors . The implementation of the Tristaina Telecabina has been a great success, since about 40,000 people have made the journey that joins the base of the resort with the Coma del Forat. In addition, the Creussans chairlift registered a historical maximum of trips, thanks to the joint ticket with the cable car, which also included the pass to this ski lift. As for billing, the summer season has been a record, and this already accounts for 8% of the annual total. The closure of the road has been valued very positively, since it has allowed the resort to be positioned as a cycling reference in the professional field as well.

Ordino Arcalís resort closes summer 2019 after 80 days . The most relevant activity has been the start-up of the Tristaina Telecabina, which has been operational for 67 days, and the days it has been closed due to the risk of a storm. A total of 39,274 passengers, an average of 500 people per day, have made the panoramic holiday from the base of the resort, in l'Hortell, to the Coma del Forat. Of these, 8.3% corresponds to free passes of residents in Andorra. The day of maximum influx was July 9, where a total of 1,763 people agreed to the ski lift. In the same way, Creussans has reached a historical maximum of trips , since the gondola ticket was joint with this chairlift, done what customers have not missed to discover this part of the border resort with France.

These data have been very well valued by the resort's director, Xabier Ajona, since 'they are the best recorded in history, in summer'. Specifically, the turnover figure reached represents 8% of the annual business.

The lakes of Tristaina , one of the busiest places in Andorra for ease of access, have noticed a decongestion thanks to the fact that traffic on the road has been restricted, to favor the practice of cycling. Ajona has positively valued this fact, since ' optimal environmental management has been achieved , there has been less pollution, and traffic and waste management has been very fluid'. And is that other years the car park lot was saturated, the traffic on the road was continuous both down and up, with the consequences that entailed, and the volume of waste was very noticeable, both in the Coma and on the trail (the degradation of this has been markedly lower) and in the lakes'. The final assessment is very positive because the measure of the closure of the road has allowed filtering and streamlining the massification of visitors in the natural environment of the Tristaina lakes.

Road closure to favor the passage of cyclists

As for the closure of the CG3 (the restriction affected the time slot between 8.30 and 17.30), many hikers have chosen to climb in the cable car to the Coma. However, from the base of the resort there is the old Verdaguer road, which gives access to the Tristaina glacier circus, offering a comfortable alternative to hikers who have preferred to climb on foot.

Among the cycling group satisfaction is maximum. Offering the last 4.5 km of the port for the exclusive use of cyclists is a fact that links with the national tourism strategy of promoting cycling . In this line has shown the president of the Andorra Cycling Federation, Gerard Riart, who has reassessed the initiative as excellent. 'All the inputs we have are very positive, we have known how to position Arcalís as an unprecedented cycling destination , and this is the way: to communicate that in Andorra we have known how to adapt and we have taken actions to strengthen the sport'. Riart recalled that the campaign launched by the institutions to promote cycling, and at the same time to raise awareness among cyclists and drivers, is linked to these actions that are launched for the benefit of the country. In the end, he recalled, 'we have to be leaders and do actions that attract attention, unchecking ourselves, and without a doubt, the closure of the road has been a success . ' The president of the federation hopes that this action can be maintained for many years.

One of the professional cyclists resident in Andorra, Carlos Verona, expressed support for the action. "During the last years, Andorra is becoming one of the capitals of world cycling, because of the number of professional cyclists we live in the Principality, but also because of the hobby that exists between the Andorran people, and because of the number of cyclists that are coming to discover the Country of the Pyrenees on their bicycles. Many of the blame for this is the initiatives of public and private entities, which are facilitating the integration of bicycles and cyclists in the Andorran habitat. A recent example has been the closure of the Comcal de Arcalís road for the use of cyclists during this summer. Personally, I think this initiative has been a success, since the times I have climbed there during this summer I have been able to check in situ the increase in the influx of cyclists, since being able to enjoy your sport and an exceptional environment, without having the risk of sharing the road with other vehicles, is a luxury.
