The past 2021-2022 ski season was a true 'festival' of records. It was spent more than ever, the billing was historic and the number of skiers was at the top. A situation that many say will be difficult to see again, but that is not why the resorts have skimped on investment. They made a lot of cash and they have spent it on ski lifts, machines, slopes, etc.. Quite a bet so that these figures are repeated or exceeded.
The ski resorts in Spain have invested a total of 67.3 million euros for this new ski season. A notable increase from the 38.19 million euros of last year. These are data provided by Atudem this past Friday in the presentation of the new snow tourism season.
Among the lift companies that have invested the most for the new ski season is Cetursa-Sierra Nevada , which with 25.6 million is at the top. Baqueira Beret SA . For its part, it has invested 17.6 million while in third place is the FGC-Turisme Group , with 11.6 million, almost 90% of this figure in La Molina and Boí Taüll in equal parts. Finally, Aramón leaves almost 5.5 million after the great investment last year.
As can be seen, the economic effort has been especially notable in the section dedicated to ski lifts , to which 41.30 million euros have been allocated, with an increase of more than 18 million in this chapter compared to the previous season.. As for the work to condition tracks , 13.6 million euros have been dedicated, almost the same as in the previous season, among other things because the resorts resort more and more to renting machines, which allows them not to have to part with the capital.
Strong increase in visitors and skiers
These investment figures, a historical record according to Atudem, have been possible mainly thanks to an exceptional 2021-2022 season , which was the recovery after the drastic drop in visitors and income from the previous season. The Covid-19 crisis, with the municipal and regional confinements and the consequent limitations on capacity and opening, weighed down the result of the winter of 2020-2021.
The recovery, although expected, far exceeded the most optimistic expectations of the ski area, since it has led to a 284% increase in visitors compared to the previous season and an increase in turnover of 330%. If we compare it with the 2019-2020 season, which was only affected by the sanitary lockdown in its final stretch, the increase in turnover compared to this has been almost 36%, while the influx of visitors has increased by more than 21%.
In the slogan of the last campaign, Atudem pointed out that, after the limitations adopted due to the pandemic, there were many "Wishes for Snow" among the fans. And the data has confirmed it.. Visitors for the 2021-2022 season amounted to 5,832,435 , which is the second best figure in the last 10 seasons, since it is only 15,000 people from the record achieved in the 2017-2018 season (0 .2% less).
Also noteworthy is the record number of visitors who arrive at the resorts to enjoy the snow with alternative activities to skiing. The number of tourist passes has surpassed the figure of 300,000 for the first time. It is an important fact because many of them did not consider going up to a winter complex and now some of them are potential to become skiers.
The increase in skiers and visitors has brought with it a notable increase in turnover. This allows not only the viability of ski resorts, but also the possibility of investing in new facilities and modernization to remain competitive.
According to data from Atudem, the total income from ski resorts in Spain amounted to 160.1 million euros. A historical record, although a very small percentage in the enormous tourism industry in our country, but which allows the generation of a good number of employees, both direct (those who work on the slopes) and indirect (hotels, restaurants, shops, real estate, etc. ...).
The 160.1 million euros represents an increase of 330% compared to the 37.2 million of the previous season (marked by COVID). An increase in revenue that also exceeds 37 million (almost 30% more) than that of the 2018-2019 season, which until now had been the best from an economic point of view, with a turnover of 123.6 million.

Regarding the average income per visitor in the 2021-22 season, it has stood at 27.47 euros , which represents an increase of 12% compared to the previous season (1ue was €24.5) and an increase of almost 11% compared to the 2019-2020 season which, to date, was the best in this section, with an average cost of 24.8 euros per visitor.
