Sierra Nevada shows the Pyrenees the most efficient artificial snowmaking system on the market.

1 More snow with much less electrical energy

Everything spends less than it did a few years ago. From the oven in our house, the fuel in our cars, the lights at home now LED, and of course, the snow production systems in the ski resorts. They are now able to produce the same amount but with a significant reduction in electricity consumption.

Sierra Nevada has completed a five-year program of comprehensive renovation of its snowmaking system. Not only has it changed the cannons for more efficient ones, but it has also changed and improved its control system, pumping and motors. All this has led it to have the most efficient snowmaking system on the market, and that is why Technoalpin has chosen it to show it to other ski resorts in the Pyrenees.

The multinational TechnoAlpin shows the renovated compressor and pumping center, the sub-center of Loma de Dílar and the new snowmakers.

According to the head of the multinational TechnoAlpin for Switzerland, Spain and North America, Karlheinz Terrabona, the snowmaking managers of Spanish, Andorran and French Pyrenees ski resorts have visited the new snowmaking system of Sierra Nevada this week to learn about the new system.

The snowmaking system is the "most advanced and efficient snowmaking center currently offered by technology".

At the meeting, the snowmaking specialists of Sierra Nevada and TechnoAlpin have presented to their colleagues from southern European resorts the action taken last summer in the Granada resort and the energy savings data produced in the first season in which the new system (pumps, compressors and snowmakers last generation) has worked together. Terrabona explained the details of the change

"from old water pumps and very old air compressors to the most modern equipment on the market; the whole system can now be controlled from a mobile app"

For his part, TechnoAlpin Spain product manager Alberto Rodriguez added that the new pumping equipment now has a frequency converter which

"is able to regulate the flow and power depending on the demand we have on the slopes, achieving a much greater energy response and efficiency."

More snow with much less electrical energy

Thus, to produce the same amount of snow this season as last season, between 25 and 30% less electrical energy was needed, a figure that reflects the reduction of the power installed now to move the system, which has been reduced by 40% percent.

A key element has been the installation in the Loma de Dílar, away from the main center, of a compressed air sub-center next to the lower station of the Monachil chairlift. It consists of two small compressors to generate compressed air locally. Andreas Bielser, responsible for artificial snow at Sierra Nevada, explains that

"to snow the slopes of Loma de Dílar, it is no longer necessary to start the main compressors located near Borreguiles", he says.

Sierra Nevada was the European epicenter of snow production.

With the renovation of the snow production nerve center executed last summer, the great transformation of the system undertaken 5 seasons ago with the replacement of almost all of the old cannons with the latest generation devices, now more effective and efficient, has been completed. The work, part of the resort's sustainability plan, co-financed with European React-EU funds, included the replacement of the electrical systems and water pipes installed in the 1990s.

The snowmaking system, in accordance with the concession granted by the Guadalquivir Hydrographic Confederation, takes water from the Monachil River between November and March to fill the two reservoirs that supply the snowmakers distributed throughout the skiable area; in spring the snow melts and returns to the riverbed.
