Soldeu is closer than ever to hosting the 2029 Alpine World Ski Championships

1 The World Championships, closer

Very positive assessment of the World Cup in Soldeu 2024

Hidalgo: "The aspirations to host the World Championships are based on realism".

The day after the celebration of the women's World Cup Soldeu 2024, it has been time for the first assessments by the main people in charge. The general manager of Grandvalira SETAP365, David Hidalgo, has recognized that the event has been a success, and that is why "the aspirations to host the World Championships are based on realism".

This success is justified by the positive feedback received from the teams and the FIS and by the fact that the two planned events have been able to go ahead despite the weather challenges. In fact, Andorra has been the only World Cup venue so far in February that has been able to complete the full program.

For his part, the director of the Andorran Ski Federation (FAE), Carles Visa, has praised the organizational capacity, highlighting that the exceptional conditions of the slope have served to give an image of

"credibility of the Pyrenees and Andorra. We have to believe it when we are told that we are one of the best venues for organizing the World Cup".

The technical director of the race, Santi López, remarked the effort made by the technical teams, both of the slope and of the canyons, machines and lifts, and added that the success of the event is largely due to the previous work that had been done in the Avet. The slope had been prepared for many weeks and, in fact, several delegations had been training on the competition track, taking advantage of its good condition.

David Hidalgo wanted to make it clear that the good result achieved this weekend with the two technical tests is not something subjective, but is based on the feedback received from the teams, the FIS, and the media, among others.

In this sense, he said that, although it has been a very difficult season, having the slope in good condition is a demonstration of the ''Andorra model'', since in addition to carrying out the competition, in parallel it has been possible to provide service to the rest of the resort, since the slopes are still open. In fact, he recalled that this weekend some 20,000 people have been registered daily, offering a very competitive service to visitors.

The World Championships, closer

On June 4, in 113 days, at the annual meeting of the FIS to be held in Reykjavik, the venue that should hold the 2029 Alpine skiing World Championships will be decided. The letter of presentation of Andorra's candidacy is more than encouraging.

And one of the strong points to demonstrate that the country is ready to host this event is the accumulated baggage in the last three years, counting all the challenges, especially at the meteorological level, that have had to be overcome.

Hidalgo also recalled all the institutional work behind the whole process, such as the involvement of the Govern, which reinforces the candidacy of the country, recalling that this is what

"makes us different and is our strength. Everyone is involved and this shows that our country candidacy is an unbeatable product".

Between now and June, work will continue on the communication plan and on the more diplomatic part, to convince the countries that have the right to vote. Hidalgo also emphasized that the achievements in other disciplines also give more value to the candidacy, referring to the podiums of Gina del Rio in the world junior cross-country skiing championships.

For the coming years, Soldeu's goal is to remain in the World Cup calendar. Thus, although it is not yet definitive, the Avet slope could host the men's technical events in March 2026.
