Today we're going to talk about the most incredible ski records and, incidentally, challenge you to see if you can beat them next season!
Who knows? Maybe you're a ski record breaker and you don't even know it ;-)
In the launched kilometre test, people get to reach over 250 km/h
Here are the 7 most impressive ski records! Let's find out, shall we?
Who hasn't jumped while skiing? And surely in most cases, you haven't landed as anticipated...
And that's totally fine and perfectly understandable! Unless you're pretty good at skiing or snowboarding, you most definitely will fall if you try to jump. And if you're trying to be like Stefan Kraft, then you'll most definitely fall!
His name may not sound familiar to you, but in 2017 he broke the world record for ski jumping - He flew over about 252 metres . How crazy is that!
In that same competition, Dimitri Vassiliev (from Russia) managed to break his record by jumping over 254 metres, but his jump never made the cut as he didn't land on his feet...
Stefan Kraft in the jump where he broke the record!
Esquiades.com Fun Fact: Did you know that there are Spanish ski resorts that still have a ski jump springboard? Specifically, there are two: La Molina and Astún.
There were more resorts with a trampoline (built in the 1980s) but due to the lack of interest in this discipline, they have been removed in most Spanish ski resots.
If the previous record seemed spectacular to you, this one will leave you speechless... and if you have vertigo even more so!
Professional skier Matthias Giraud made the base jump from the highest in 2019. How is it possible? Well, skiing from the top of Mont Blanc (4,810 metres) and jumping into the air from a serac located at 4,359 metres, only using his parachute!
Matthias Giraud
Esquiades.com Fun Fact: Do you know that you can get very close to the top of MontBlanc with hardly any effort? This is possible thanks to the cable car of l' Aiguille du Midi (it has a height of 3,842 meters), located in Chamonix.
With Esquiades.com you can inclide your Chamonix Unlimited Ski Pass in your ski holiday and discover every corner of the Mont Blanc.
Can you imagine that someone could ski as fast as a Formula 1 driver? It's possible!
In the discipline known as Kilometer Launched, in 2016 and at the Vars ski resort, the Italian Ivan Origone set the speed record by reaching 254.95 km/hour.
Ivan Origone
As you can see, Ivan was wearing an aerodynamic suit that allowed him to reach the indicated speed and that even caused him an acceleration greater than that of a Formula 1
Esquiades.com Fun Fact: The Grandvalira ski resort host the World Championships of Kilometer launched every single year and they even have a ski slope where people can train. This is the Riberal black slope and it is located very close to the Pas de la Casa ski area.
If you think that skiing or snowboarding is a sport for relatively young people, you are very wrong. We will only tell you that 1 year ago, Junior Bonous broke the record for being the oldest person to practice Heliski .
Still don't know what Heliski is? It is a discipline in which you are transported to the top of a totally virgin mountain with a helicopter and you only have to worry about sliding through the powder snow that you will find on the slopes.
Junior Bonous before taking the helicopter!
Esquiades.com Fun Fact: Perhaps you have never heard of this discipline, although it is quite well known in countries such as the US and Canada. If you'd like to give this a go, the Baqueira Beret ski resort offers this service. We've already posted some super savings, so why not check out our ski deals!?
Normally, when we go skiing, we don't have to worry about going up the slopes, we just sit on the chair lift or gondola lift and enjoy the beautiful scenery around us.
On a good day of skiing (about 6 or 7 hours skiing) the accumulated snow in altitude that is usually done is about 7,000 metres... and that taking into account that we go up a mountain on chairlifts.
Well, this next person came up with the brilliant idea of trying to break the record for the greatest drop in skiing in 24 hours and without the need to use any lift or chairlift. That is, going up and down using only seal skins and skis .
Martina Valmassoi breaking this record
In total, she made a whopping 17,645 metres of elevation , constantly going up and down. It's like going up and down Everest more than 2 times in just one day!
Esquiades.com Fun Fact: This took place in one of the ski resorts near the Dolomiti Superski ski area. We currently don't have ski deals for the Italian dolomites but watch this space! Corvara ski resort is calling our name!!
When spring arrives, you can find yourself skiing at 15 Cº during the largest part of the day!
So much so that in 2013, 500 skiers and snowboarders did not think twice to put on their bathing suits to go skiing. This happened in the Siberian ski resort of Sheregesh !
In the Catalan resort of Masella, it is also a common thing to do in Spring.
Esquiades.com Fun Fact: Actually, you don't have to go so far to enjoy this show. In the Pyrenees , there are several ski resorts that say goodbye to the last day of the season with people skiing and snowboarding in a swimsuit and there's even a small pool so people can ski over it.
One of the best known and which has been holding this event for several years is Formigal . If you want to cool off next season in its mini pool, take a look at the ski offers we have for you in Formigal-Panticosa.
You could say we saved the best for last.. Ski World Records aren't only broken in Canada, the French Alps or the Dolomites. This next one happened very close to where our Esquiades.com head offices are.
We're talking about the Aragonese ski resort called Astún .
And it is that the 6 times world champion of trail running, Luis Alberto Hernando , along with his partner, Sergio Lamas , wanted to establish a new absolute vertical skiing record for 24 hours. Or what is the same: non-stop skiing for 24 hours in Astún .
Luis Alberto and Sergio celebrate the record in Astún!
Both achieved a cumulative drop of 86,565 metres . To do this, they started skiing at 08:00 in the morning of any Tuesday in 2017 and finished at the same time on Wednesday. Incredible !
Esquiades.com Fun Fact: Despite the fact that the Astún ski resort is not a very large resort (it has 50 skiable km), the same ski pass is valid for Candanchú, so between both resorts there is a total of 100 skiable km.
Would you like to visit the Astún-Candanchú ski resort this 2022-23 ski season? Check out our super ski holidays.
