It's no secret that Spain is known among tourists for its fine sandy beaches, excellent gastronomy or the metropolises of Madrid, Barcelona, or Seville. However, it's probably not the first place that comes to mind when you think of your next skiing holiday with friends.

While it might be true that Switzerland, France or Austria are more often associated with ski resorts than sunny Spain, true ski experts know that Spain offers great ski deals, with almost 1,000 kilometres of slopes and 36 ski resorts.

In recent years, more and more winter sports enthusiasts have chosen a ski deal in Spain, and we're not surprised. Here are just a few of the reasons why you should plan your next ski holiday in one of the ski resorts in Spain:

Why should you ski in Spain?

Hardcore skiers are always headed to the Alps, but ski resorts in Spain offer several interesting advantages over their more famous cousins in Switzerland and Austria:

- They are much cheaper compared to ski resorts in Europe.

- Cheap and direct flights to major cities like Barcelona, Madrid, or Granada make a ski holiday in Spain a breeze. Who can say no to a cheap ski deal?

- Many of the ski resorts are affordable and offer a variety of easy runs, ideal for a family ski holiday

- Kill two birds with one stone and combine culture and skiing in one trip by visiting a ski resort near one of Spain's most popular cities.

- Ski resorts in Spain offer mild temperatures and plenty of long, sunny, blue bird days during the entire ski season.

- Quality slopes, long runs, ski schools, winter sports activities, good food and the best ski hotels make Spain one of the most popular ski and winter sports destinations in Europe.

And all this in a country that has the second-largest number of mountains after Switzerland. The tide is definitely turning and Spain is on its way to becoming one of the best ski destinations in Europe.

What are the most recommended ski resorts in Spain?

If you've read this far, you've probably already got a taste for skiing in Spain. But if you still can't decide between all the ski resorts we have on Esquiades.com, we're happy to help, so stay tuned! Here come our favourite ski resorts in Spain for the 2022/2023 season.

Skiing in Baqueira Beret: Top of the tops in Spain

As the largest ski resort in Catalonia and one of the largest ski resorts in the Pyrenees, we have to start this list with one of our top picks:
Located in the beautiful Valle de Arán and part of the neighbouring Valle de Aneu, it is considered by many to be one of the best ski resorts in Spain in terms of service, runs, and slope length.  It covers the Baqueira, Beret and Bonaigua sectors and is famous for its numerous slopes and good snow conditions. The skiable 167 kilometres are spread over a total of 112 slopes (6 green, 43 blue, 46 red and 17 black), all linked by ski lifts and chairlifts, making it easy to get from one sector to another.
The slopes are very wide and of moderate gradient, making it a perfect option for a family and beginner ski holiday.  Fun facts: Baqueira Beret is a well-known meeting place for the rich and famous. So don't be surprised if you see the Spanish president on the slopes. Who knows if he's among the more than 1,500 skiers who gave this slope an 8.5 rating on Esquiades.com? Take a look and see for yourself!

Skiing in Sierra Nevada: The southernmost ski resort in Europe

Situated between the Andalusian city of Granada and the Mediterranean Sea, this is one of the few ski resorts in Spain that is not in the Pyrenees. As the southernmost ski resort in Europe and among the highest mountains in Spain, towards the end of the season, it is possible to ski in the morning and sunbathe on the Costa del Sol in the afternoon. Sierra Nevada offers 105 kilometres on 124 slopes (20 green, 42 blue, 55 red and 7 black) and 7 snow parks. This makes it one of the ski resorts in Spain with the most skiable kilometres. If you want to enjoy your stay to the full extent, the ski resort offers a wide range of leisure and après-ski activities. You'll find recreation areas, snow slides, archery, snowshoeing and even ice skating. There are also mini-Olympics in the snow and guided tours to show you the beautiful surroundings of the Sierra Nevada National Park. And when the sun goes down, you can continue skiing until ten at night with the night ski pass.
A visit to Granada, recently voted “Spain's most beautiful city”, is a must. Stroll through the old town or admire the architectural gems of the Alhambra before ending the evening with tapas.

Formigal ski resort is undoubtedly one of the most modern ski resorts in Spain and is ideal for a ski holiday with the family, couples, or a holiday with friends. The ski resort has 137 kilometres of slopes and is divided into four different sectors:  The offer ranges from very easy slopes to extremely steep descents and freeride areas.

An après-ski evening in the open-air club “Marchica” with your friends is an absolute highlight. By the way: If you book your ski deal incl. ski pass for the Formigal slope with Esquiades.com, you can also ski in Panticosa. More than 4,000 reviews give this ski resort an overall rating of 7.9 points.
