The race for the World Ski Awards, which decides the best ski resort both nationally and globally for the past season 2023-2024, is now open. Nine names have been chosen for Spain, exactly the same as in recent years.
All of them will have to fight against the great winner of the last two years, which has been Candanchú. In fact the Aragonese ski resorts have been the great dominators of the World Ski Awards in Spain range: they have taken six of the 10 nominations, leaving the Catalan Pyrenees with only four of which Boi Taüll was left with three of those awards. Other winners have been Cerler, which won the first four editions, and Baqueira Beret, which has only managed to win once.
Along the way, Sierra Nevada, Astún, Formigal and Masella, the four that have been left without an award in the 10 years that Spain has been included in the World Ski Awards, have fallen by the wayside. Perhaps this is the year for one of them to debut.
If you think that any of the eight nominees should take the award, this year there is the option to vote individually. From the World Ski Awards website you can log in and choose your favourite ski resort. You will only need to register to register your choice.
Andorra has as every year its three winter resorts: Grandvalira, Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís, although since the disappearance of the Vallnord brand only the first of them has taken home the statuette.
The World Ski Awards give awards for 25 countries, where in all of them the best ski resort and hotel are chosen. And only in some, in addition to the Boutique Hotel and Ski Chalet or even transfers. There are also cases for the Best Travel Agency (which always wins the same), best snowpark (always Laax), best Tour Operator (divided between two). The country with the most nominations is France, with 13 ski resorts to choose from. Unfortunately none of them in the Pyrenees.
In theory the winner per range comes from a panel of professionals who cast their votes, as well as skiers and amateurs. Anyway the results bring some controversy, since there are many categories that have been awarded to the same ones consecutively since the beginning of this reply.
The ninth Spanish ski resort is Madrid Snozone, which competes in the Indoor range. This year it will have to face up to 4 facilities from China, almost half of the nine contenders, including Ski Dubai and Ski Egypt, as well as the European Alpincenter from Germany and Snowworld from the Netherlands. New Zealand's Snowplanet closes the list. In any case, this is a new range where the same one has always won consecutively.
