Information about Chamonix Montblanc Unlimited

Chamonix Mont-Blanc is one of the most legendary ski resorts in the world. Located in the heart of the French Alps and dominated by Mont Blanc (4,808 m), it offers a unique high mountain experience, perfect for those looking for technical skiing, freeride and spectacular scenery.

More than a resort, Chamonix is a true alpine destination: it combines history, adventure and modern infrastructure that attracts skiers and snowboarders from all over the world.

What makes Chamonix a unique destination?

  • Authority and legacy: it hosted the 1st Winter Olympic Games in 1924, giving it a mythical status.
  • Challenging and varied terrain: it offers four independent domains that satisfy skiers of all levels, from beginners to expert freeriders.
  • Unlimited views: the constant view of Mont Blanc elevates the skiing experience to a superlative level.
  • Flexibility of access to the domain: the choice between Chamonix Le Pass and Mont-Blanc Unlimited allows you to customize your adventure to the maximum.

Useful tips for planning your holiday

Detailed planning is key to enjoying a destination as great as Chamonix.

  • The best dates are March, as there is a good balance between long days, sunshine and good snow at altitude. January is perfect for powder and lower prices.
  • What to bring: warm technical layers, high factor sun protection and, if you plan to ski off-piste, safety equipment (ARVA, shovel and probe).
  • Where to stay: choose Argentière if you are an expert and prioritize Grands Montets. Opt for the center of Chamonix if you value leisure and urban life.

How to get to Chamonix Mont-Blanc?

Chamonix is in Haute-Savoie, very close to France, Italy and Switzerland, which makes it a perfectly connected destination.

  • Nearest airport: Geneva (GVA), about 88 km away (1h15 by car).
  • Access by car: possible from Spain, with mandatory winter equipment.
  • Getting around the valley: no car needed. Local buses and trains connect all ski areas and are usually free with the carte d'hôte.

Book now your hotel plus ski pass package on Esquiades.com and get ready to conquer Mont Blanc!

Chamonix offers more than 160 km of slopes, with elevations ranging from 1,035 m in the valley to 3,300 m at Grands Montets. The ski areas are not connected to each other by ski lifts, but by efficient transport.

Main ski areas

  • Grands Montets: technical skiing and powder snow.
  • Brévent-Flégère: sunny slopes and direct views of Mont Blanc.
  • Balme - Tour/Vallorcine: ideal for families and progression.
  • Les Houches: forest slopes and World Cup venue.

Piste details

The ski area is extensive and offers slopes for all levels, from gentle slopes for beginners to off-piste areas for experts.

Green Run (Initiation)

  • Approximate runs: 10
  • Characteristics: These are safe initiation areas, mainly located at the bottom of the valley (such as Les Planards).

Blue Run (Intermediate)

  • Approximate slopes: 35
  • Characteristics: Wide and well trodden runs, considered ideal for intermediate skiers in the Balme and Brévent areas.

Red Run (Advanced)

  • Approximate Runs: 40
  • Characteristics: These are long slopes with a sustained slope. They constitute the bulk or the majority of the offer in the Brévent-Flégère area.

Black Piste (Expert)

  • Approximate number of runs: 20
  • Characteristics: They offer the highest demands, including "shovels" or difficult technical sections. They are concentrated in the Grands Montets and Les Houches areas.

Essential areas by level

  • Beginners: The Balme-Tour/Vallorcine and Les Planards areas have the gentlest slopes and are the safest.
  • Intermediate: Brévent-Flégère is the perfect place to progress, with wide, sunny red and blue runs and the best panoramic views.
  • For experts and freeriders: Les Grands Montets (especially at its high altitude) and the slopes of Les Houches are the focus of experts. Chamonix is the freeride capital.

Snowparks, freeride and themed areas

  • Snowparks: there are areas equipped for freestyle, such as the Brévent park, although the resort prioritizes natural terrain.
  • Legendary freeride: Chamonix is world famous for its off-piste routes, especially the Vallée Blanche, a 20 km route starting from the Aiguille du Midi (only for experts with a guide).
  • Snow quality: the northern orientation of Grands Montets and the high altitude of most of the domains guarantee an exceptional quality of powder snow, with artificial snowmaking systems reinforcing the lower and vital areas.

In Chamonix you can book two types of ski passes, designed to enjoy the valley in your own way.

Chamonix Le Pass

Enjoy the essence of skiing in Chamonix with access to the most authentic areas and slopes for all levels:

  • Brévent-Flégère: with spectacular views.
  • Grands Montets (without access to the high altitude): wide and varied terrain for lovers of pure snow.
  • Balme - Tour/Vallorcine: sunny and perfect slopes for relaxing days.
  • Beginner areas: Ideal for beginners in a safe environment.

Restrictions of the Le Pass: does not include access to other neighboring resorts (Courmayeur, Megève) or to the main tourist attractions (Aiguille du Midi or the Montenvers train), included in the Mont-Blanc Unlimited ski pass.

Mont-Blanc Unlimited Chamonix Pass

Catering and après-ski

  • Restaurants on the slopes such as Le Bergerie de Planpraz, with sunny terraces and Savoyard cuisine (raclette, fondue).
  • Gastronomy in the valley: The town offers options ranging from traditional Savoyard cuisine (crozets are a must-try) to Michelin-starred restaurants.
  • Nightlife is vibrant. Venues such as the Chambre Neuf are famous for their cosmopolitan atmosphere and live music, and allow you to extend your day's skiing into the evening.

Schools, nurseries and rentals

  • Ski schools: The ESF (École du Ski Français) offers lessons for all levels, including specific training in freeride and glacier safety.
  • Nurseries and children's areas: there are nurseries and children's areas in the beginners' areas, so that parents can enjoy the more technical slopes while their children are cared for.
