Tavascan ski resort switches to artificial snow

Published: May 26, 2024

In Spain you can still ski in resorts where it is guaranteed that 100% of the snow is natural, the one that falls from the sky. Tavascan is one of them, and the other one is Fuentes de Invierno. There are those whose canyons are so old and so concentrated in one area that it is almost as if they had none, as is the case of San Isidro, where they are all on the Cebolledo slope. And something similar happens in Valdesquí, where they barely have a couple of devices, since they are not allowed to build a reservoir.

Tavascán drops out of this 'select' group. It has just awarded the first phase for the installation of a snow production system. The contract has been won by Demaclenko, from the HTI Group, the same that controls the Leitner and Bartholet brands in ski lifts, or Prinoth in snow grooming machines.

Snowfalls are usually abundant at the Tavascan ski resort.

For the time being, the ski area to which the Mascarida ski lift gives access will be snowed, where lessons for beginners are given. In total, about 300 hectares that will go from the very base of the ski resort at 1,750 meters, up to 1,924 meters above sea level. In a second phase still to be defined and its project drafted, the facility should reach almost 2,200 meters, somewhat lower than its maximum elevation.

The investment for the installation of an artificial snow system in the ski resort of Tavascan amounts to 677.433.07 euros (VAT included), a very high budget for the Town Council of Lladorre (255 inhabitants), which maintains the winter complex only with the income from Ski Passes and catering, as well as the canon of Endesa, which manages the hydroelectric power plant.

A bomb squad unleashes snow avalanches

FGC undertook the drafting of the project, while the Department of Territory will contribute 500,000 euros to complete the work. The remaining 100,000 euros will be provided by the company Centre d'Activitats Lúdiques Pirinenques (CALP), 100% owned by the Town Council of Lladorre, which manages the facilities.

Tavascan is the only municipally owned ski resort in the Spanish Pyrenees. In 1990 they built the Pleta del Prat refuge, and the following year they opened several cross-country ski circuits. In 1997 they installed the tandem chairlift. A few years later they created a couple of areas for beginners, each with its own ski lift, one in the middle of the resort, and the other at the base, where they currently have a single low-pressure canyon.

Tavascan is included in the season ski pass of FGC, who collaborates with this ski resort, although it is still managed in accommodation by CALP S.A.

A bomb squad triggers the snow avalanches

Although it has 6 marked kilometers, traditionally the skier of Tavascan is the one who comes to look for the off-piste thanks to the great amount of snow that receives every winter, between 5 to 8 meters depending on the season. A central route of about 5 kilometers for experts, allows to return to the base from any point of the mountain to take the chairlift again.

Anyway there are winters like this one, which closed a few weeks ago, that the weather does not want to collaborate, and leaves the ski resort of Tavascan without those traditional images of spectacular snowfalls. The artificial snow system will allow to continue giving lessons , especially to the schoolchildren of the region, and that on weekends the families can continue coming.
