Dolomiti Superski turns 50 with more investment and higher prices

1 50 years of Dolomiti Superski
2 Almost 100 million euros in investments

If nothing goes wrong or if the weather does not allow it, the Dolomiti Superski season will start on November 30. First the slopes of Cortina d'Ampezzo, Plan de Corones, 3 Cime Dolomites, Val di Fiemme-Obereggen, Alpe Lusia-San Pellegrino and Civetta, and on December 7 will join the rest to complete the 12 stations that make up this vast ski area of about 1,200 skiable kilometers.

The high season will be from December 22 to January 6 and then from February 2 to March 22.

The prices for skiing this year are going up again, especially for those who want to buy a 1-day ski pass. It is likely that we are talking about one of the least sold passes, but those who want it will have to pay 83 euros, 3 more than last year. For those who prefer and can ski outside the high season, the price is reduced to 75 euros, again 3 euros more than last season.

Anyway, the package that most interests the Spanish skier who wants to go this winter a few days to Dolomiti Superski is the one of several days. The three-day package goes up from 216 to 241 euros; and the six-day package is 423 euros compared to 381 euros last year.

Prices have increased between 3.7 and 11% depending on the type of ski pass. On the other hand, the season pass is going up, but not that much. Thus, this pass is being sold these days in advance sales promotion at 945 euros, which is 20 more than last year. Or what is the same, it has increased by 2.16%. A more contained percentage than the passes of several days.

50 years of Dolomiti Superski

In Dolomiti Superski there are no less than 130 companies that manage ski lifts. Some belong to companies that control entire ski resorts, while others belong to municipalities, hotels or even private individuals. All of them will celebrate 50 years of working together to offer a unique product.

It all began on November 14, 1974, when representatives of the ski resorts of Cortina d'Ampezzo, Plan de Corones, Alta Badia, Val Gardena-Alpe di Siusi, Val di Fassa-Carezza and Arabba created the Associazione Superski Dolomiti.

Until then, this amalgamation of owners created a problem for skiers, who had to buy a different ticket for each lift.

The idea was conceived in 1973 by Erich Kostner, founder of the Corvara ski resort, who launched the proposal of a single ticket to several of the neighboring resorts with which it shared slopes and lifts. But the initiative was so popular that even other winter resorts that were not connected to each other wanted to join in.

In 1974, with a single ski pass, it was possible to access 250 lifts located in 6 valleys of the Dolomites, including those that today form the Sellaronda circuit and are part of the Tour de la Grande Guerra: Cortina d Ampezzo, Plan de Corones, Alta Badia, Val Gardena /Alpe di Siusi, Val di Fassa and Arabba. In this stage skiers have at their disposal 740 km of slopes.

One year after its foundation, in 1975, the lifts of Alta Pusteria (now 3 Zinnen Dolomites) became part of Dolomiti Superski, increasing the number of lifts available from 250 to 306. In 1976 Val di Fiemme/Obereggen and San Martino di Castrozza were added. 347 facilities and 930 kilometers of slopes are the figures at the end of the second "reunited" winter season.

The Isarco Valley (today Rio Pusteria-Bressanone), with its ski areas of Plose, Jochtal Vals and Gitschberg, joined in 1979, increasing the slope offer to 1,000 km.

In 1984 it was the turn of Tre Valli (today Passo San Pellegrino), which with the separation of Val di Fassa became an independent valley of Dolomiti Superski, while in 1993 the Civetta ski area also entered. In 2000 the Marmolada marked the last addition to the Dolomiti Superski.

Almost 100 million euros in investments

Such a colossal ski deal meant that the demand for new equipment was extremely high every year, which led to the creation of several companies in the nearby valleys, such as the ski lift manufacturer Leitner and the snowmaking systems manufacturer Technoalpin. At the same time, other Austrian brands also opened production plants or bought other manufacturers already in the area, such as Agudio and Agamatic, which built the first ropeways in those valleys.

An innovation that has not ceased over the years. For this year, the 120 companies and 12 areas that make up Dolomiti Superski have invested a total of 96 million euros in new ski lifts, modernization of facilities, expansion of snow production or acquisition of snow grooming machines, among others.

The 8-people chairlift in Plan de Corones stands out, although other new detachable six-people s have been installed in Alta Badia, Arabba-Marmolada, 3 Zinne and Rio Pusteria. While at San Martino di Costrazza a 10-people gondola lift will be inaugurated this winter. Practically all these lifts have been purchased from the local company Leitner.

About 1,200 kilometers of ski runs and 450 lifts make up the Dolomiti Superski ski area.
