A gondola lift to replace the Parador chairlift in Sierra Nevada

It seems that Sierra Nevada has decided that what will replace the Parador chairlift will be a gondola lift. This is what Jesus Ibañez, CEO of Cetursa, told the newspaper Granada Hoy, who added that there is no date for the execution of the project because the bureaucratic procedures are long.

The Parador chairlift is a two-people , first used in 1966 and renovated in 1994, which runs at a speed of only 1.2 m/s. It is probably the slowest chairlift in Spain. Its few chairs and low speed, makes its transport capacity is reduced to less than 1,000 people per hour. This causes long queues at the end of the day almost every weekend and holidays. In addition, it is the only lift in the resort that is not accessible with wheelchairs or adapted ski equipment.

To increase capacity, several options had been considered, including the construction of a subway funicular. But the heavy investment required for an equipment of this dimension and the possible problems at the time of digging in the mountain have ended up discarding it, as it has said to Granada Hoy,

"A geotechnical study was made that assured us that the angle at which the rocks were and the pressure of the mountain went against this type of transport. It required voussoirs every meter of the underground, which increased the cost in a crazy way. So we opted for the gondola lift. It's not easy either, but it's more practical.

There is no date for this new cable car. As it is urban and runs 100% on renewable energies, it is being processed to receive European funds that could pay for a large part of the installation. Once they are obtained, they will have two years to finish this lift.

It is known that it will recover its four stops. When it first opened in 1966, it reached the old Parador (hence its name) of which nothing remains today after the fire that in 2006 razed to the ground what was left of this accommodation that had already been abandoned for some years.

When it was inaugurated in 1966, it connected the ski area with the Parador de Sierra Nevada.

Two years later the second section of this chairlift, the so-called Parador II, was eliminated, and since then this two-people remained with the lower, intermediate and upper stops. The new gondola lift will take you to the Los Peñones car park lot so that from there you can take the Virgen de las Nieves chairlift.

The arrival of this future Parador gondola lift to the Los Peñones car park lot will one day allow the development of this area to increase the number of accommodations to 2,500 beds distributed in three five, four and three star hotels; two and three star aparthotels, and youth hostels.

It is a project reflected in the Sierra Nevada Strategic Plan 2022-2030, where it can be seen that the buildings would not exceed three stories in height and that great importance would be given to space and landscaped areas. And underneath, a subway car park lot for 2,500 car park spaces, more than triple the number of spaces offered by the current Los Peñones car park lot.

But as Jesús Ibañez admitted to Granada Hoy, for the moment this project will not be executed in the short or medium term,

"After making the Strategic Plan, we made a hotel consultancy, which recommended us to continue taking advantage of the possibilities that gave us the buildings that are already built to create new hotels before starting to exploit new undeveloped areas urbanistically".

The Sierra Nevada Strategic Plan also contemplates a ski lift to connect the upper part of Virgen de las Nieves with the upper part of Borreguiles. This would offer a circular system with the future Parador gondola lift.
