The countdown is coming to an end and the first big date for all snow lovers is here. If you're already in the mood and you're still thinking about where to go skiing for a long weekend in December, this article will interest you, and very much so!

You probably already know (or not) that all of us who are part of the Esquiades.com team like challenges, as well as debunking great myths. First, a few years ago, we offered ski deals at a unique price and that "going skiing is a very expensive sport" was forgotten.

In this post we want to continue with that philosophy of breaking with clichés. If you like skiing and you are more or less familiar with the main ski resorts, you will surely have heard many times about the ski resort of Baqueira Beret. A halo of luxury and fame has surrounded this valley over the years, along with the rumour that skiing there is "somewhat more expensive" than in other resorts.

About the former, we explain it in depth in the following paragraph. And about the latter, we'll tell you that... it's over! Because from this year onwards, you will find the best ski deals in Baqueira Beret that include the hotel + ski pass package on our website, so you can see first-hand why Baqueira has such a widespread reputation in the world of skiing. And if you've never been to this spectacular resort, you probably won't be able to resist the urge to visit after reading this post. Next, we explain the reasons why skiing in Baqueira is so special (and even exclusive) in detail.

1. Privileged location and orientation

Baqueira Beret is a ski resort located in the Catalan Pyrenees, more specifically in the Aran Valley, in the province of Lleida. This region is the closest to the Pyrenees, as it is the northernmost region of Catalonia. After undergoing a modification in 2003, the slopes of the Baqueira ski resort also reach its neighbouring valley, Vall d'Aneu

Some of the most outstanding aspects of the Baqueira Beret ski resort are the good weather and its privileged orientation. Its slopes, like the valley, are directly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, as they face north.

In the same way that in summer the most popular destinations are those that offer the most days of sunshine, during the winter season, the ski resorts that stay open the longest and guarantee snow for many days of the season are the ones that attract the greatest number of skiers. And if we talk about open days of ski resorts on the Peninsula, this ranking is undoubtedly led by Baqueira Beret... But there are more!

2. Ski slopes for all ages and levels

As you can probably imagine, Baqueira Beret is one of the best ski resorts in Spain for many skiers. But why?

Its extension, with over 96 miles of skiable slopes for all levels and tastes, makes it a resort suitable for everyone. Moreover, it is made up of three large ski areas: Baqueira, Beret and La Bonaigua, which have a total of 103 ski slopes, all connected by ski lifts and chairlifts. This means that getting from one sector to another is practically an effortless job.

In Baqueira Beret there are 6 green slopes (the least difficult) for beginner skiers, 42 blue slopes for those who dare to tackle steeper slopes, 39 red slopes, ideal for perfecting skiing technique, and 16 black slopes, dedicated to more expert skiers.

The Bonaigua area is the furthest away and is mainly aimed at professional skiers. There, there are plenty of off- slope and freeride areas.

If, on the other hand, you love snowboarding and freestyle skiing, the Beret sector will become your favourite area of the resort, as this is where the only two snowparks in Baqueira Beret are located.

Finally, the Baqueira area is the oldest and most varied. You can find everything from green slopes to learn how to ski or to enjoy a family holiday to the snow, to slopes with vertiginous gradients, such as the famous Escornacabres black run, one of the most popular in this ski resort.

Whatever your level, if you are skiing for the first time in Baqueira Beret, here is this map of the slopes, which will surely be useful so you don’t get lost ;-).

3. The maintenance of the slopes, another reason to choose Baqueira Beret

The state of the slopes at Baqueira Beret is another factor that sets it apart from other resorts. Although its facilities and maintenance have always been close to excellence, on its 50th anniversary, celebrated last year, the organisers placed even more emphasis on this. We explain some of the new features and improvements that have been made since then.

New ski lifts and a new chairlift have been built, allowing more skiers to access the slopes. In terms of maintenance, two new snow groomers have been installed to ensure that the slopes are in perfect condition.

In addition, in 2011, 59 snow cannons were installed to improve the experience for all users, in addition to the existing ones. Today the resort has 611 snowmaking cannons. Yes, this is undoubtedly another fact that demonstrates the level of quality offered by this resort and helps to explain why it is a real benchmark.

By the way, did you know that the first snow has already fallen in Baqueira Beret? Yes,we know, this is what we were talking about when we mentioned its privileged climate and location... If you want to see the state of its slopes live (that is, at this very moment when you are reading this post), you can do so via the Baqueira Beret webcam that we offer you on our website. As you know, we can explain a lot of things here, but a picture is always worth more than a thousand words.

4. Its additional services are not far behind either

Baqueira Beret is full of "extras" to make your holiday to the snow a truly unforgettable experience. With all these additional services that we are going to explain below, you will be waiting for the snow season to come back there again.

For those of you who are going skiing with children, we would like to inform you that the resort has no less than 4 children's snow parks, all of them with qualified staff. In the Baqueira sector there are two parks dedicated to kids: the one at 1,500 metres above sea level for children between 3 months and 2 and a half years old and the one at 1,800 metres above sea level for children between 2 and a half and 6 and a half years old. In the latter, the "mini-skiers" can experience their first contact with the snow by taking skiing lessons. Ski equipment is included.

On the other hand, there is another playground in the Beret area and another, the last one, located in Bonaigua, both of which are open at weekends and always subject to prior reservation. These two parks are aimed at children over 2 years of age, who can also get started in the world of skiing in the most fun way and, of course, in complete safety.

As for ski equipment hire, there are 5 places that offer this service. Three of them are in Baqueira, one in Beret and the last one in Bonaigua.

Continuing with the additional services on the slopes, for those of you who are new to skiing, we recommend the ski school in Baqueira Beret, Era Escóla. With almost 50 years of history and more than 200 qualified teachers, this ski school offers Nordic skiing and snowboarding classes, both private and group. So learning to ski will be a piece of cake.

5. It's not all about skiing... Aprés-ski in Baqueira

Another of Baqueira's differentiating factors is the number of activities you can do after skiing. Take out your notebook and write down some of our recommendations:

- Aprés-ski in Baqueira Beret: "Divino" is a very well known place in the area, ideal for enjoying a few drinks and good music after a day's skiing. And if you're looking for special cocktails, at "Luna" you'll find a wide range of drinks and a great atmosphere. Oh, and if you've already been to one of these après-ski places, don't hesitate to leave a comment explaining how it went at the end of the post ;-).

- Restaurants in Baqueira Beret: In the town of Vielha you will find restaurants for skiers to enjoy the après-ski in Baqueira. What better than a good meal to get energy and make the most of the next day of skiing? In Baqueira there are restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets and during the day, bear in mind that you won't need to go far from the resort to eat, as you'll find all kinds of places to eat right on the slopes. Below you will find a map with all these restaurants so that you can get a better idea of their locations.

- Much more: there are some hotels in Baqueira Beret that have spa services, and don't worry because if you choose a hotel that doesn't offer them, you can also relax in one of the thermal centres in the area. A stroll around the region for sightseeing is also a highly recommended option. Contemplating the valley and the location of the site is priceless, as it is surrounded by nature and idyllic landscapes.

6. And what's more, skiing in Baqueira you'll always be able to meet a celebrity...

Let's not deny it, there's something "cool" about skiing in Baqueira, and not just because of the quality of its facilities... You probably already know that many celebrities choose Baqueira Beret to spend their holidays in the snow, don't you?

Yes, it's true, and for years, Baqueira Beret has been the ski resort where celebrities such as the royal family, international actors, models, elite athletes and even politicians spend their winter holidays. How can we forget Victoria Beckham dressed in all the Channel pieces... a photograph for history! But there's more... Here are some of them below:

For a moment, let your imagination run wild. Imagine you're on the chairlift going up one of the slopes of the ski resort of Baqueira Beret, you throw your head to the side and you're sitting next to one of them! Become a skier-paparazzi, because you're sure to get at least one selfie, and you know it!
