Italy offers breathtaking landscapes and numerous destinations to enjoy a skiing holiday in the snow. Italian ski resorts are concentrated in the Italian Alps, bordering Italy, Switzerland and Austria, and each resort offers its own charm.
Going by car can make the ski holiday quite stressful, with traffic, car park problems, long queues and suitcases that don't fit in the trunk. So why not think of another way to get to the ski resorts? Going skiing using public transport is easier than ever in Italy, with many famous ski resorts well connected with trains and buses. Forget the car and not only the environment will thank you, but also your pocket.
Luckily, most of the ski resorts are easily accessible from cities like Turin or from airports like Geneva, Venice and Innsbruck. Read on to discover the 5 most accessible ski resorts in Italy!
Want to experience the thrill of skiing at an altitude of 4,000 meters in the Italian Alps? Then travel to Aosta, which can be reached by train from Milan in just over three hours.
From Aosta train station, it's a short walk to the Aosta-Pila cable car, which links the town of Aosta (579 m) with Pila (1801 m) and its ski resort in the municipality of Gressan in just 18 minutes. At the top, you will find yourself in the heart of the region, with panoramic views of the highest peaks of the Aosta Valley, such as the famous Monte Rosa, Mont Blanc, the Grand Combin and the Matterhorn.
Located in the picturesque Piedmont region, Bardonecchia is a skier's dream, offering over 100km of slopes for all tastes and levels with Snowpark and a relaxed alpine atmosphere.
The fastest way to reach Bardonecchia mountain by train is from Turin: from Porta Nuova station, just take the metropolitan train and in about an hour and a half you will reach Bardonecchia.
Cortina d'Ampezzo, the "queen of the Dolomites", can be reached by public transport from Venice in about 3 hours. Take a train to Calalzo di Cadore, where you can change to a bus that will comfortably take you to Cortina in just 35 minutes.
Ski among the incredible landscapes of the heart of the Dolomites without giving up a fast and cheap transfer. Please note that everything you save on transportation can be invested on the slopes (or off-piste in the Après).
Plan de Corones or Kronplatz is one of the best ski destinations in Europe. Located in Val Pusteria in South Tyrol (Alto Adige), the resort takes its name from the mountain that rises 2,275 meters above the area.
The region is well connected by public transport. The Ski Pustertal Express connects Plan de Corones with the Dolomites 3 Zinnen, where the famous Tre Cime di Lavaredo are located, in just 40 minutes. Simply disembark at Perca, near Brunico, the main town, and walk to the Plan de Corones Ried cable car.
Val di Sole is an excellent choice for a skiing holiday by train. The Daolasa-Marilleva resort is the only resort in Italy of a train that takes skiers directly from the resort to the cable car exit. The resort is located in the Val di Sole of Trentino, where the Folgarida-Marilleva ski area is located, offering more than 50 km of slopes of different levels of difficulty.
Approximately halfway between the villages of Dimaro and Marilleva is Daolasa, which can be reached comfortably using the Dolomiti Express train; once there, you can directly access the ski lift that leads to the slopes in the heart of the Folgarida and Marilleva ski areas. These, in turn, are connected to Madonna di Campiglio and Pinzolo for a total of 150 km of slopes.
Host of the 2006 Winter Olympics and World Cup skiing, the ViaLattea (Milky Way) ski area is the best located Italian ski resort close to an airport. It is only an hour's transfer from the nearby Turin airport and offers an extensive 400 km network of ski runs, with excellent connections to the nearby resorts of Montgenèvre and Claviere.
The main resort of Vialattea in Oulx is 6 km down the valley from the Sauze d'Oulx lifts. The station is conveniently located on the Paris-Lyon-Turin-Milan TGV line. TGV trains stop in Oulx at least 3 times a day. Buses await at the Oulx train station to take train passengers quickly to all the towns along the Via Lattea, including Sauze d'Oulx. Sestriere and Montgenevre
Although the slopes cater primarily to intermediate skiers, the wide variety of slopes offers options for all levels. The ski resort has more than 30 restaurants serving delicious Italian cuisine, and the après-ski scene is fantastic, with a mix of vibrant bars and relaxed social venues.
