The Government of Aragon has authorized this Monday the signing of an agreement for the connection of the stations of Astún and Candanchú by gondola lift, which should be completed in December 2024. This was announced by the Vice President of the Executive and Minister of Industry, Arturo Aliaga, after the extraordinary meeting of the Governing Council.
The Department of Industry, Competitiveness and Business Development presented the Territorial Plan of Tourist Sustainability in Destination and the Secretary of State for Tourism established the distribution criteria and the credit destined to the financing of the actions.
On the basis of this agreement, Aragón will receive 30 million Euros, of which 8 million Euros correspond to the project to join the ski resorts of Candanchú and Astún, in addition to the agreement of last March, which includes VAT as a financeable expense.
This Monday, the granting of a direct subsidy by the Department of Industry, Competitiveness and Business Development to the Mancomunidad del Alto Valle del Aragón for an amount of 8 million Euros has been ratified.
Candanchú ski resort
The necessary field studies and analyses have already begun in order to undertake the union of the skiable domains.
On the other hand, Turismo de Aragón will promote the processing of the procedure to obtain the declaration of the project for the union of the ski area of the Astún ski resort with the ski area of the Candanchú ski resort. In addition, Turismo de Aragón will promote the procedure to have the declaration of the project to join the ski area of the Astún ski resort with the ski area of the Candanchú ski resort as an investment of regional interest and of general interest of Aragón.
The Mancomunidad del Alto Valle del Aragón will develop the procedures for the elaboration of the project and construction of the cable car and will allocate the European funds obtained for the execution of the plan of general interest, including the studies and projects and complying with the execution deadlines foreseen in the call.
In addition, it will promote the processing of the bidding procedures, taking into account that all the steps related to the contracting procedures will begin once the Project of General Interest of Aragón has been published.
They will also transfer to the Government of Aragón the cable car for the occupation of the public domain and for the start-up, use and operation of the same, including all the licenses, authorizations and concessions acquired.

The Huesca Provincial Council will contribute 3 million euros to the Mancomunidad del Alto Valle del Aragón to develop this project.
Once the financing has been determined, as well as in the event of cost overruns occurring during the construction of the facility, the Government of Aragón will undertake to assume, at its own expense, the costs of the project. undertakes to assume, with a charge to the corresponding budget items of the Department of Industry, the financing and additional construction cost overruns that exceed the financing finally obtained under the plan and that contributed by the Huesca Provincial Council.
"We must prioritize employment and economic development and not do everything in the Ebro Valley," said Aliaga, who pointed out that a route is contemplated from the Reina Sofía de Candanchú chairlift to the Collado de Astún, at a speed of six meters per second and with a capacity to transport 1.800 people per hour, with a cabin that can accommodate up to 10 passengers at a time.
Later on, it will be possible to connect with the Formigal cable car, allowing skiers to take a differentiated offer of different types of difficulty and scenery. The overall impact will be seen when the three resorts are connected.
In the Aragón valley there has always been the feeling that there was a lack of investment because there are two private resorts, although it is the DGA that is running the bus between Astún and Candanchú and has granted loans for the resorts.
Days ago the project to link Formigal with Astún was presented and an intense negotiation work has been carried out to define the route. We started working at full speed. This is one of the strategic projects of the Government of Aragón, the union of the valleys and three skiable domains".
"The snow ski area is one of the strategic emblems of our tourism and has a huge impact on the economy of the valleys of Alto Aragon.
We are no less than Andorra, France, Italy or the Alps. We are committed to creating a rural, sustainable and international tourist destination. The Department has worked intensively with the Ministry of Industry to have the Next Generation Funds."
On the other hand, Arturo Aliaga recalled that a point of the four-party governability agreement:
"talks about the modernization of the ski resorts. All four of us signed it. If we make things environmentally sustainable and the projects well, what problem is there?"
The process will continue with the presentation of the Project of General Interest of Aragón (PIGA) for initial approval, environmental assessment (including the environmental assessment of the connection between the two domains), and the awarding of the operation contract. The environmental evaluation (including the environmental evaluation of the connection of both ski areas and the cable transport infrastructure) and final and complete approval of the PIGA.
This agreement will have a term of 4 years, extendable for another 4 years, always in accordance with the established terms. Aragón will manage ten Tourism Sustainability Plans in Destination, involving an investment of more than 63 million Euros.
The bulk of this amount, nearly 53 million Euros, will be allocated to projects to be developed in the municipalities and the territory in which the Aragonese ski resorts are located. This project has a deadline to be developed until 2024, while the period to complete the plans approved this year will end in December 2025.
