Zermatt is one of the most iconic ski destinations in the Swiss Alps. Swiss Alps and the world. Located in the heart of the Alps and at the foot of the imposing Matterhorn, this resort offers a unique skiing experience, with world-class facilities, long-lasting slopes and year-round skiing in its glacier area. In addition, Zermatt is part of the Matterhorn Ski Paradise international ski area, which is accessible with the international ski pass and connects to Cervinia and Valtournenche in Italy.

The resort offers a 360-kilometer ski area, distributed on slopes for all levels:

Blue runs: 36

Red slopes: 104

Black slopes: 30

Why ski in Zermatt?

Zermatt is a resort that perfectly combines alpine charm with a modern, high-quality infrastructure. With an impressive vertical drop of up to 2,279 metres from its highest point, the area offers slopes for all levels: beginner, intermediate and expert. The resort has more than 145 runs spread over 360 skiable kilometres and extends from 1,620 metres in altitude in the village of Zermatt to 3,883 metres at the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, Europe's highest ski area accessible by cable car.

In addition to its magnificent natural environment, Zermatt is noted for its network of modern lifts, including the 3S cable car that connects Trockener Steg with the Klein Matterhorn. This lift is a masterpiece of engineering and offers a spectacular panoramic experience to skiers as they ascend towards the summits.

Did you know that the entire village of Zermatt is pedestrianized? The use of cars or vehicles that use fuel is prohibited and only electric cars are allowed. When arriving at the resort, it is mandatory to park the car in a large car park lot in Täch, forget about it for a few days and take the train that leaves every 20 minutes and after a short ride, arrive at Zermatt station. In this winter resort most hotels offer a free pick-up service at the station.

In addition. Zermatt offers us the Skiline: the online platform for ski lovers from all over the world. This system records the days spent on the slopes of Zermatt in a diagram with the altitude and the data of all the descents made. It also allows you to download footage and photos for free and share them with friends. Isn't it great?

What type of skier is suitable for Zermatt?

Zermatt is a destination suitable for skiers of all levels, from beginners who can enjoy the learning areas and gentle slopes, to experts looking for challenges on the black runs and freeride areas. For the more advanced, Zermatt offers some of the longest descents in the Alps, such as the 25-kilometer descent from the Klein Matterhorn to Zermatt, which combines red and black run sections. Its connection to Cervinia also makes it possible to enjoy long days of skiing exploring both sides of the Swiss-Italian border.

Zermatt ski area

  • Sunegga: Accessed by a modern subway funicular located about 5 minutes walk from the train station. Skiing is between 200 and 3100 m, on sunny slopes of all levels.

  • Gornergrat: It can be accessed from Sunegga, from the Gant area. You will find medium and high level slopes between 2200 and 3400 metres altitude. This area is also accessible from the center of Zermatt (next to the station) with a rack railway that is very slow (it takes about 40 min). It is famous all over the world for the extraordinary alpine panoramas that can be seen during the holiday.

  • Klein Matterhorn: The access from Zermatt to Klein Matterhorn, is the most uncomfortable, as the cable car leaves from one end of the village (15 min walk from the center, there is ski-bus). Klein Matterhorn is the largest of the Zermatt areas, with the most attractive and difficult slopes and with the connection to the Italian resort of Cervinia. The slopes here range from 1600 to 3800 m altitude. At the top there is a glacier where skiing takes place all year round. Throughout the year thousands of tourists take these cable cars to enjoy incredible views of the Matterhorn (Matterhorn) and the glacier and the other peaks, so in Zermatt going up is almost (but only almost) as exciting as going down.
