Cableway route between Alagna and Zermatt
Ten kilometres of cableway, from Champoluc and the Matterhorn to Zermatt, between Italy and Switzerland, in the heart of the Alps, are the missing link to create one of the largest ski areas in the world, with five connected valleys, 38 peaks around 4.000 meters and, in total, more than 580 kilometres of facilities.
Last December, the feasibility study was handed over to Monterosa Spa and a development committee that brings together a conglomerate of economic interests that support the project.
In the coming months, it will be up to the Aosta Valley Region to examine the dossier and, in case of a positive assessment, to proceed to an economic and environmental impact study and, finally, to an executive project.
The connection between the Cervino-Matterhorn area and that of Monte Rosa is a historical aspiration to link the south and north of the Alps and would give life to one of the largest mountain areas, spanning two nations, open to skiers, sportsmen and travellers in general.
The intervention needed to create the missing connecting section would cost around 75 million and would represent one of the most important infrastructure investments for the Aosta Valley, strategic in terms of impact, as was that of the Mont Blanc Skyway, with an impact on at least 5.5,000 jobs and the ability to act as a driving force for the seasonal diversification of high-altitude tourism.
The central element of the project is the construction of a cable car between Alagna and Zermatt that would connect five valleys: Valtournenche, Val d'Ayas, the Gressoney valley, the Alagna valley and the Cervinia valley and several other districts: Zermatt in Switzerland, Cervinia-Valtournenche, Champoluc, Gressoney and Alagna.
A single facility, therefore, capable of linking in thirty minutes the Cervino Ski Paradise and Monterosa Ski areas, connected - with skis on - and with a total of 75 ski lifts.
The mayor of Alagna, Roberto Veggi, states that "the facility is not designed solely and exclusively for skiing. On the contrary: it is first and foremost a tool to connect several alpine valleys and link two existing areas. In the city they build subways to move faster, in the mountains, cable cars".
The system would be demountable, without a new ski run in the valley, but with an area for freeriding, and it will take a year for the final design and two summer seasons for the works.
Monterosa
Among the most significant aspects, the possibility of creating new flows from Switzerland and new opportunities for summer tourism, linked to trails and mountain biking, in addition to the positive effects for those living in the Upper Valley, with a reduction in travel times compared to the car.
