Candanchú will be connected to Astún with a 10-passenger gondola lift
As he advanced last January 2, the president of the Mancomunidad del Valle del Aragón, Alvaro Salesa, has reconfirmed to Radio Jaca SER Pirineos that the connection between the ski resorts of Candanchú and Astún will be made with a single lift, which given the length of the route will be with a gondola lift.
The initial project to link the ski resorts of Astún and Candanchú (and vice versa) always spoke of making this route with two lifts. One of them would be a cable car whose base in Candanchú would be in a somewhat distant area that required a second lift to bring skiers and snowboarders closer.
There was speculation about a skier conveyor belt, which could impede passage at some point by going along the ground, or a fixed gripper chairlift. All in all, an inconvenience for the user, who would have to transfer between lifts. A complication especially for families or people with reduced mobility.
To overcome this inconvenience, it has finally opted for a gondola lift in L. That is, at one point of its route, in this case at the lowest elevation, it will make a 90º turn. It is an option seen in the Alps, and that in Spain only has Baqueira in gondola format, and Sierra Nevada and Formigal in the Dílar and Sallent chairlifts respectively.
European Funds: 10 million
Huesca Provincial Council: 3 million
Government of Aragón: 9 million
Total: 22 million euros
Yesterday, Thursday, the Mancomunidad del Valle del Aragón held a meeting to decide how to distribute the 4 million euros that have been allocated to them from the distribution of funds that were intended for the cable car between Formigal and Astún. As Alvaro Salesa explained to Radio Jaca SER Pirineos, it was decided that half of them would go to the cable car between the latter resort and Candanchú.
The rest will be used to adapt an Astún chairlift so that it can take bicycles in summer and to build a footbridge-viewpoint at the Pico de la Raca in the same resort. The investment for this is 370,000 euros.
For Candanchú, another 370,000 euros are earmarked to adapt the Tobazo chairlift for its opening in summer and a tourist train; 312,000 euros more to design a mountain bike circuit and a park and ride facility.
The remaining almost 1.5 million euros are earmarked for other tourism-oriented actions in Castiello de Jaca, Villanúa and Canfranc.
In Astún, the gondola lift will reach an average height of the resort.
The Sierra Nevada National and Natural Park, the same that embraces the ski resort from which it takes its name, has been included in the IUCN 'Green List', which certifies that there can be coexistence between mountain and slopes.
