It will be possible to go to Cerler ski resort without cuts but for the moment without tunnels.

As of today, October 11, the intermittent closures that have affected the N-260 road in the section that connects Campo with Congosto del Ventamillo, a fundamental access to the Benasque valley and the ski resort of Cerler, will come to an end.

After five years of intense work, the Ministry of Transport has announced that the 12 kilometres affected by the works will once again be available for traffic, marking the end of a series of cuts and detours that have complicated traffic in the area. The total investment earmarked for this improvement has reached 75.7 million euros, aimed at widening the road and improving both traffic conditions and road safety.

The last total traffic cut, which affects the section between El Run and Campo, ends today, Friday, at 14:00 hours. Although the road will officially reopen, some restrictions will remain in place for the next few weeks. In particular, a speed limit of 40 km/h will be maintained in certain areas while a series of complementary works are being completed.

One of the highlights of this work has been the construction of two tunnels, with lengths of 265 and 540 metres respectively, which will help to improve traffic in the complicated Ventamillo gorge. Although these tunnels will not be operational immediately, they are expected to come into operation in the next few weeks, once safety tests are completed and the lighting and signaling installations are verified. In the meantime, traffic will be temporarily diverted along the old road parallel to the tunnels.

The widening works have been particularly complex due to the characteristics of the terrain and the environmental impact. The N-260 has gone from having a 5.5-meter wide platform to an 8-meter wide one, which will allow two heavy vehicles, such as trucks or buses, to cross each other without difficulty. To achieve this widening, cantilevers have been built , supported and anchored in the rock, in order to minimize the occupation and the impact on the areas near the Ésera river. These structures, in addition to facilitating traffic flow, help preserve the natural environment through which the road runs.

The final phase of the works, which took place in the last few weeks, included the laying of the wearing course, the installation of drains and the installation of new signage, defenses and beacons. In addition, planting and hydroseeding works have been carried out to restore the affected environment. However, the vertical signaling and some interventions in the drainage and environmental restoration of the section have yet to be completed.

The Ministry of Transport has stressed the importance of maintaining caution during the first weeks of opening, especially while some punctual works continue in the area. Drivers should strictly respect the signage and follow the safety indications both for their own protection and for that of the workers still operating in the area. The full completion of the tunnels will allow for smoother and safer traffic flow, but until this happens, extreme caution is essential.

The completion of these works is great news for the inhabitants of the Benasque valley and for the many skiers who visit the area each year. Access to the valley, one of the main tourist destinations in the Aragonese Pyrenees, will be significantly improved thanks to the widening of the road and the construction of the new tunnels. This will facilitate the arrival of visitors to the area, benefiting the local economy and boosting tourism, especially in peak seasons such as winter and summer.

The Ministry has emphasized that the design of the entire project has taken into account environmental constraints and has been carried out with the aim of minimizing inconvenience to users during the execution of the works. Although the process has been long and has required patience on the part of residents and drivers, the results offer a modern and safe infrastructure, which will contribute to the development of the region in the coming years.

Although the road will be definitively open as of October 11, complementary works will continue over the next few weeks. The new tunnels, which are key to the project, will be put into service once the safety tests have been completed and the installations required for their correct operation have been verified. Once these tests have been completed, traffic will be much more fluid on this section, definitively eliminating the need to use the temporary parallel road.

The N-260 road to Benasque is now wider and safer
