In recent years, the main ski resorts in Spain and Andorra have taken off in terms of the quality of their facilities and the gastronomic offer. While many Spaniards cross the border for price, the French who come to our side do so for quality and are willing to spend more. Today, winter resorts such as Grandvalira, Baqueira, La Molina+Masella or Formigal are filled every weekend with French customers.

Saint Lary has not been immune to this situation, and for a few years it has begun a process to modernize itself. Not so much to attract Spaniards, but rather so that the French do not 'escape' our ski resorts.

Yesterday, Monday , Akim Boufaïd, director of the Altiservice in Saint-Lary-Soulan, revealed some of the news that we are going to see in the short term. They have been working on them for a few years.. The manager reminds that to place a new ski lift a minimum of 3 years is required before obtaining all the permits. And that to create a new track, about five years and fights with environmental groups.

With the permits already in hand, Akim Boufaïd was able to talk about what they already have planned in the short term. About 22 million euros will be spent in just over a year and a half . For the Director of Altiservice, this is an unprecedented investment in recent years. But it must lay the foundations for a modernization aimed at being able to face its Spanish and Andorran competitors.

New gondola lift

As of this coming April, work will begin on a new gondola lift that connects the Espiaube-1600 car park with the top of Tourette-2320 meters and will replace the current ski lift that reaches the Col du Portet . The departure resort will be in the same place, but the lift will be faster, leaving its passengers ready to start skiing in just six minutes.

It will have a capacity of 2,800 skiers per hour, with 60 cabins for 10 seated passengers.

New chairlift

The top of the Tourette will not only receive skiers from the car park, because a new chairlift will bring passengers from Les Merlans. Once again, it is a ski lift that will replace the existing one, but this one will have double boarding so that pedestrians can also climb.

It will be a six-people detachable and its 65 people will be capable of transporting 2,800 people per hour.

With the increase in the capacity of these two lifts, the Tortes and Mouscadès chairlifts, as well as the Merlans gondola lift, can be dismantled. This new configuration will make it possible to reach a higher point in the resort quickly and comfortably, but it raises some doubts, in particular about the access of beginners to Espiaube, and whether not too many skiers will reach that point.

New chairlift for 2023

The second budgeted chairlift is left to start installing in the spring of 2023 . It will allow the return from Espiaube to Pla d'Adet through Soum de Matte in 4 and a half minutes. This "Forêt" ski lift will depart from the current departure resort of Mouscadès and will join that of Soum below the arrival of the birches.

Once again, there is a commitment to a ski lift with 67 six-people chairs that will allow the movement of 2,400 people per hour and will reduce the number of shuttle buses between Espiaube and Pla d'Adet.
