The Minister of Territory, Housing and Energy Transition, Silvia Paneque, has announced the start, this February, of the processing of the special urban development plan and the environmental assessment of the project to convert the Vallter ski resort, managed by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC), into a sustainable tourist destination offering year-round activity. The project to convert the Vallter ski resort, managed by Ferrocarriles de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC), into a sustainable tourist destination that offers year-round activity.

The main action of this project, called Vallter 365, is the installation of a new gondola lift as a single access to the resort, allowing the restriction of vehicles accessing the natural environment and promoting a panoramic holiday up to the 2535 m elevation, a year-round attraction.

In addition, a large part of the current ski lifts will be eliminated and the areas of the Natural Park of the Headwaters of the Ter and Freser rivers will be renaturalized.

Paneque made this announcement today during the central act of celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Ripollès ski resort, accompanied by the president of FGC, Carles Ruiz Novella, and before a hundred institutional and social representatives of the region.

With the beginning of the town planning and environmental proceedings, the starting signal is given to a project that should allow Vallter to become a modern and sustainable resort. Once this process and the corresponding public information have been completed, the objective is to tender the project and work on the gondola lift next winter, so that it can enter into service in mid-2027. The investment will be around 40 million euros.

Sustainable and controlled access in the Natural Park

The new gondola lift will be 3,420 m long with a 627 m slope and an average gradient of 18.25%. It will be equipped with 10-passenger cabins that provide a transport capacity of 2,000 people/hour and an approximate travel time of 12 minutes. It will have its base at 1535 m elevation, where part of the vehicle car park and the minimum necessary services will be located, and will reach 2162 m elevation.

This facility will have an intermediate station, at 2000 m, which will serve the El Xalet slope, the customers of the Pastuira hostel and the refuge of the Centro Excursionista de Cataluña, while allowing the replacement of the Enric Planella chairlift installed in 1979.

Technical data Vallter 365 gondola lift

  • Type: Detachable gondola lift
  • Departure: 1.535 metres (Setcases)
  • Intermediate stop: 2000 metres
  • Arrival: 2.162 metres (Vallter 365)
  • Length: 3.242 metres
  • Difference in altitude: 627 metres
  • Travel time: 12 minutes
  • Cabins: 10 people
  • Capacity: 2000 p./h.
  • Opening: 2027
  • Cost: 40 million euros

Next to the arrival station of the gondola lift, there will be the lower station of a new combined lift (also called telemix) that will replace the current Jordi Pujol Planella chairlift, and will be equipped with cabins and chairs to allow the most expert skiers to use it during the winter without removing the ski lifts. It will be equipped with cabins and chairs to allow more experienced skiers to use it during the winter without taking off their skis, and smaller skiers and pedestrians will be able to use it with cabins.

This configuration will be flexible thanks to the interconnection of both facilities through a shared automated car park, so that a user on foot will be able to climb in a cabin from the lower level, at 1535 m, to the upper level of the resort at 2535 m, where the new Les Marmotes brasserie is located. This double configuration will allow the upper installation to operate according to the needs of the operation at any given time. That is to say, only with cabins, only with chairs or mixed with chairs and cabins.

The new gondola lift, which will operate with guaranteed energy of 100% renewable origin free of CO₂ emissions, will replace the current access to the station that is made by a high mountain road owned by the Setcases Town Council crossing the Natural Park. The road will remain closed to general traffic and will be used only as a service road, compatible with cycling.

The elimination of the passage of vehicles within the Natural Park of the headwaters of the Ter and Freser rivers leads to a significant improvement in the landscape impact and in the reduction of the carbon footprint, since it avoids the access of the 85,000 vehicles that each year go up to the station by the Setcases road. It also provides access control to the Natural Park.

At the same time, current resort infrastructures will be eliminated, such as the car park lots located at elevations 2000 and 2170. The Bac Barquins I and II chairlifts, the Chimeneas chairlift and the Enric Planella and Jordi Pujol Planella chairlifts will be dismantled . The beginners' area will be maintained.

Presentation of the Vallter 365 project

Recovery and regeneration of spaces and improvement of biodiversity.

Once all these infrastructures have been removed, actions will be carried out to regenerate the natural environment and increase the natural capital both in the car park platforms and in the Chimeneas ski area. The aim is to follow the European trend of "rewilding", which consists of restoring the environment through natural processes in order to have a resilient and self-sustainable ecosystem. This action will be carried out jointly with the Natural Park of the Headwaters of the Ter and Freser rivers.

Activities all year round

Vallter 365 is a project that will allow the resort to become a destination for nature and outdoor sports, modern and sustainable, 365 days a year.

Thus, in addition to the current ski and snow activities, the new concept of mountain nature called ECO FAST TER will encompass all summer and winter activities. Snowshoeing, ski touring, mountaineering, trail-running or hiking will be promoted and new activities will be offered, both in their more sporty side, such as mountaineering and high mountain courses, as well as those oriented to the discovery of nature with photography workshops, flora and fauna or yoga at altitude. There will also be more recreational activities for all ages, such as tree parks, zip lines, downhill with non-motorized carts and offers for family activities, such as guided tours and hiking.

All activities will be focused on two aspects: the natural, aimed at getting to know the environment and the Natural Park, and the sporting, which seeks activities with more emotion, integrating the Sustainable Development Goals in its operational management.

In the gastronomic area, Vallter's commitment is to promote local products, offering a varied tasting of local products in each establishment of the resort. The Gastro Vallter concept also encompasses different experiences to enjoy high mountain gastronomy.

Vallter 365 will be the new name of the Setcases ski resort.
