Esquiades.com presents an analysis on snow tourism in Spain during the 2017-2018 season. The report provides data on the influx of stations, the degree of user satisfaction based on parameters such as ski slopes, catering, ski lifts and Wi-Fi connection of winter resorts, among others.
To say that Spain is not known for its ski resorts is by no means discovering gunpowder. The sun and the beaches, which both attract tourism to the Spanish coast, often overshadow the many and varied alternatives offered by the country. However, it is among the 5 most mountainous countries in Europe and has a wide network of ski resorts, whose facilities have been visited by more than 3 million people during the 2017-2018 season.
For its part, the leading snow travel agency in Spain, Esquiades.com , has led to skiing more than 140,553 people during the winter season. The average investment of its customers is 619.73 euros per reservation, which represents an increase of 4% compared to last year.
Esquiades.com has developed a survey system to know the degree of satisfaction of its customers based on multiple parameters such as ski resorts, the state of the slopes, the offer of restoration, ski lifts and Wi-Fi connection of the winter complexes, among others. All this allows to gather the habits and preferences of the skier client.
As far as ski resorts are concerned, this season's ranking is led by Grandvalira (with a score of 8.4, based on 12,285 opinions), accompanied by Baqueira Beret (8.3 based on 517 opinions) and Cerler (note of 8.2 with 1,142 opinions). With an average score of 8.1 and 8, Masella and Vallnord follow, respectively.
Rarely do the stars agree to break the forecasts and ridicule them like this year. The weather predicted a dry, warm and snowy start to the season, but it has not been that way. The winter has brought with it very low temperatures, irruptions of polar air and snowfalls with which any "sick" of the snow and the ski would dream. It has been, in short, one of the most rigorous and cold seasons of recent years .
Suffice it to cite the example of Baqueira Beret, which has accounted for 63 days of snowfall with a sum of thicknesses of up to 10 meters , double that of last season. In addition, the minimum recorded temperature has been -14.3ºC and the average snow thickness of 126 centimeters (almost half a meter more than in the previous campaign).
Despite the amount of snow accumulated, meteorologically it has also been a campaign marked by unfavorable weather conditions that the seasons have managed to solve very well. Grandvalira, for example, has not had to close its facilities any day, responding to heavy snowfall with machine work and a total of 68 activations of the avalanche prevention plan (PIDA).
As for the geographical origin of Esquiades.com customers, Barcelona is the destination that has registered the most reservations (22.90% of the total) ahead of cities such as Madrid (16.14%), Valencia (6.51% ), Girona (1.49%), Zaragoza (1.46%) and Lleida (1.19%). European capitals such as Paris, London or Lisbon represent approximately 5% of the total reserves .
On the other hand, the Spanish city that invests most in its holidays to the snow is Madrid, with an average of 1,036 euros per reservation. They are followed by Bilbao (877 euros), Valencia (872 euros), Girona (612 euros), Barcelona (603 euros), Zaragoza (585 euros) and Lleida (482 euros). Internationally, travellers from London spend an average of 1,128 euros per reservation, and those in Toulouse 465 euros.
Specifically, the sales volume of Esquiades.com through mobile devices and tablets has skyrocketed compared to 2017: the increase translates into approximately 11.7% more purchases on iOS and Android (compared to those made on last year). In total, 36.46% of the reserves come are made through mobile devices.
These figures warn of a trend that will intensify even more in the coming years: and as it increases the use of smartphones, many consumers decide to book their holiday to the snow through these devices. Also, it should be noted that the Apps of Esquiades.com allow enriching and optimizing the experience of the skier customer , putting at your disposal the tools necessary to book your holiday to the snow.
With respect to the previous season, reservations made in advance have increased by 436% in July, 54.54% in August, 55% in September, 24% in October and 7.1% in November. This proves that snow fans book their stays and plan the holiday more and more in advance .
